Suppression of the epigenetic modulator usp16 reverses aging and degenerative features in in vitro and in vivo models of osteoarthritis

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent disorder affecting more that 300 million people globally and no treatment is currently available to prevent, stop or even restrain joint degeneration. Many targets potentially involved in its pathology have been identified so far but unfortunately the clinical translation have shown only limited success. The purpose of this study was to test a novel approach where we genetically target a key epigenetic modulator of stem cells and tissue aging, USP16, to develop a novel disease-modifying treatment for osteoarthritis.
