Krill oil supplementation's effect on school grades in typically developing adolescents

The effects of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) on physical health, mental health and cognitive outcomes has been investigated intensely (for reviews see among others [1 –3]). LCPUFAs such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are involved in a vast array of processes in the human body such as signal transduction, inflammation, blood-brain barrier integration and neuronal membrane fluidity [4,5]. Considering these functions, DHA and EPA hav e been hypothesised to be important for brain functioning, and it might not come as a surprise that there are a multitude of studies investigating the effect of DHA and/or EPA supplementation on cognitive functioning (for reviews see among others [3,6,7]).
