A case of VIPoma

A VIPoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumour secreting vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) that has an incidence of 1 per 10 million per year.1 Vasoactive intestinal peptide causes cardiovascular instability due to its vasodilatory effect on splanchnic and peripheral vascular beds. Direct gut effects of VIP lead to increased secretion of intestinal fluids, resulting in a syndrome of watery diarrhoea, achlorhydria, intestinal ileus, skin flushing and metabolic acidosis.2,3 It is associated with several electrolyte disturbances including hypokalaemia, hypophosphataemia, hypomagnesaemia, and hypercalcaemia.
