Effectiveness of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation therapy and strength training among post-menopausal women with thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. A randomized trial

Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC OA) presents with localized pain at the base of the thumb, restricted thumb mobility, and muscle weakness. It is one of the most common causes of upper limb-related disability in Europe and the United States.1-4 CMC OA has a higher incidence in women than men5-6 and this increases exponentially in post-menopausal women.6-7 Between the ages of 50 and 60, it affects over 66% of women, becoming a highly prevalent disease.7-8 The symptoms affect the women's ability to perform certain daily living activities such as opening a jar, turning a key in a lock, opening food packets, and wringing out laundry.
