The immediate impact of the transition to a pass/fail Step 1 exam
Historically, students’ three-digit scores on the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step 1 were a main factor in determining competitiveness for residency programs. In February 2020, the world of medical education shifted drastically when it was announced that the USMLE Step 1 would transition to a pass/fail scoring system. One of the main factors Read more… The immediate impact of the transition to a pass/fail Step 1 exam originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

What ’ s Up, Docs
BY KIM BELLARD Here’s how I’ll know when we’re serious about reforming the U.S. healthcare system: we’ll no longer have both M.D.s and D.O.s. Now, I’m not saying that this change alone will bring about a new and better healthcare system; I’m just saying that until such change, our healthcare system will remain too rooted in the past, not focused enough on the science, and – most importantly – not really about patients’ best interests. Let me make it clear from the outset that I have no dog in this hunt.  I’ve had physicians who have been M.D.s and others who have been D.O.s, and I have no ...

Empowering Trainees to be Leaders and Change Agents
We described several wellness initiatives that were done at individual campuses. The University of Illinois where I attend, we had a wellness committee that we formed led by students. We were able to partner with local companies to bring in more healthy food options. We were able to set up a counseling center dedicated specifically towards medical trainees. Joe Geraghty: And so that’s at the institutional level, but then in our local community, we had several letters from places like the University of Chicago. We had a medical student who wrote about how they were developing kind of like easy to digest infograp...

Transcript for Using Machine Learning in Residency Applicant Screening
We reported one year in the paper, but we’ve done it two years now. And filled 20 spots of individuals who, for whatever reason, were not invited on the initial review. But the algorithm suggested, “Hey, this person could be an amazing fit for our program.” And what was probably the most interesting thing, and again, it’s sort of qualitative findings but was that when you asked the program directors to look back at those folks who were not invited initially, but the algorithm said, let’s give them a consideration it was often metrics related issues. Jesse Burk-Rafel: They came from maybe...

The USMLE Step 1 score reporting change looks bad. Here ’s what it gets right.
Social media platforms lit up when sponsors of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) announced Step 1 score reporting will change from 3-digit numerical scores to pass/fail by January 1, 2022. 3 strategies for matching into a competitive specialty, even with a lower USMLE score
For applicants seeking to match into a competitive specialty, it can be challenging.   In fact, it’s not uncommon for programs to receive over 100 applications for a single residency position.   To sort through that many applications, many programs use filters. One type of filter is a USMLE“cut-off” score:   applicants who don’t score above a […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more.
