Improving medical specialty selection with pre-training examinations
Considering that the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) primarily evaluates candidates’ general medical knowledge, there is a growing need to introduce specialty-specific pre-training examinations (PTEs). This is because the USMLE’s focus on overall medical knowledge may not accurately predict the performance of applicants in their specialty-specific in-training examinations (ITEs). The introduction of PTEs could Read more… Improving medical specialty selection with pre-training examinations originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Faculty and Student Perceptions of Unauthorized Collaborations
In this study, it was clear students do recognize the need for individual accountability and that their individual competence will be assessed, but they also recognize that they are encouraged to work with each other and that throughout their careers they will be working with colleagues in the clinical settings and for the rest of their lives. That gets at some of the tension, and we create some of that tension in the curriculum because we foster students working together in small groups and we embrace them supporting each other and helping each other learn. Then that comes up against the individual demonstration of compet...

Ensuring Fairness in Medical Education Assessment
This study takes a first step in centering the margins as we as medical educators grow our understanding of the dynamics of promoting fairness in assessment. Future studies should explore feedback with intentional inclusion and involvement of diverse students, teachers, and researchers at every stage of the research process from conceptualization through dissemination and application of the new learning. We thank our participants for their time and candor discussing this sensitive topic and the Group on Educational Affairs for funding our work. Thank you for your time and attention and the focus that you’ll put on th...

What ChatGPT Means for Virtual-First Care
The following is a guest article by Erica Jain, Co-Founder and CEO at Healthie ChatGPT has been dominating headlines since its release in November. While the AI Chatbot has already led to some truly whimsical poetry, comedic greetings, and helpful travel suggestions, it has also started to raise questions about its application in healthcare. ChatGPT is revolutionizing the world – and this will hit healthcare, albeit a bit slower than other industries. Healthcare is inherently conservative and resistant to change, plus liability in a care setting is a massive issue. All that being said, in the 5 to 10-year time horizo...

In An Ironic Twist, the AMA Seeks Alternatives to the Residency Matching Program
Jeffrey A. SingerLast weekend the American Medical Association House of Delegates passed a  resolution tacitly claiming that the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) is likely anti ‐competitive and a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. The resolution concluded:RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association study alternatives to the current residency and fellowship Match process which would be less restrictive on free market competition for applicants. (Directive to Take Action)This is quite surprising, given that the AMA was a  co‐defendant, along with the Association of American Medical Col...

ChatGPT In Healthcare: What Science Says
This study demonstrates that ChatGPT, a large language model, can assist in radiologic decision-making at the point of care, achieving moderate to high accuracy in determining appropriate imaging steps for breast cancer screening and breast pain evaluation, although limitations of the model, such as misalignment and “hallucinations”, must be considered when designing clinically-oriented prompts for use with large language models.Analysis of large-language model versus human performance for genetics questionsMedrxivThe use of language models like ChatGPT in clinical genetics has the potential to provide rapid an...

Is mandating pre-medical training widening disparities in the U.S. physician workforce?
Around 75 percent of U.S. physicians are U.S. MD/DOs who have completed pre-medical training, while the remaining 25 percent are international medical graduates (IMGs) who may not have completed pre-medical training but are still able to take the United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE) and become licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. From the Read more… Is mandating pre-medical training widening disparities in the U.S. physician workforce? originally appeared in KevinMD.com. What ’s Next For ChatGPT In Healthcare?
You have probably heard that ChatGPT has recently passed business, law and medical exams, qualified as a level-3 coding engineer at Google (with a $180K starting salary!), outperformed most students in microbiology and checked a passable grade in a 12th-grade AP literature test.  Of course, better take these results with a pinch of salt. Although the algorithm indeed did reasonably well on the USMLE test, it was not a full-value assessment as all questions requiring visual assessment were removed. Pinch of salt or not, however, it is obvious how the capabilities of these large language models have been expanding...

The cost of overpreparing: my experience with the USMLE and what I learned
“It’s all in your head.” When my friends, family, and mentors said these five words to me in the days leading up to the pre-pass/fail USMLE Step 1 exam, they meant it literally: everything you need to know to succeed is already in your head. When my internal dialogue repeated those words, they took on Read more… The cost of overpreparing: my experience with the USMLE and what I learned originally appeared in KevinMD.com. A Medical Student Perspective on Loss and Self-Awareness
“There are these two young fish swimming along and they meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, ‘Morning, boys. How’s the water?’ And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and eventually one of them looks at the other and goes, ‘What is water?”– David Foster Wallace, Kenyon College Commencement 2005, “This is Water.” The journey from medical school to residency goes fast: there scarcely seems time enough to do it all. Although we practice again and again so we can better discern what troubles our patients, we do not do the same for ourselves. In fact, unti...
