Distribution and treatment needs of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Bangladesh: A Bayesian geostatistical analysis of 2017-2020 national survey data
Conclusions/SignificanceFor each of the STH species, the prevalence was reduced by at least 80% since treatment was scaled up more than a decade ago. The current number of deworming dosages could be reduced by up to 61% if the treatment strategy was adapted to the local prevalence. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Uganda: Results from population-based prevalence surveys in five districts
by Benjamin Tinkitina, Prudence Beinamaryo, Moses Adriko, Betty Nabatte, Moses Arinaitwe, Alfred Mubangizi, Paul Emerson, Sanjaya Dhakal, Kristin M. Sullivan BackgroundSoil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are caused by roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), and hookworms (Necator americanus andAncylostoma duodenale). In Uganda, baseline surveys conducted during the late 1990s and early 2000s suggested STH infections were common, with prevalence>50% among surveyed schoolchildren. In 2003, a national program was launched with mass preventative chemotherapy (PC) and health education for chil...

A drug repurposing screen for whipworms informed by comparative genomics
by Avril Coghlan, Frederick A. Partridge, Mar ía Adelaida Duque-Correa, Gabriel Rinaldi, Simon Clare, Lisa Seymour, Cordelia Brandt, Tapoka T. Mkandawire, Catherine McCarthy, Nancy Holroyd, Marina Nick, Anwen E. Brown, Sirapat Tonitiwong, David B. Sattelle, Matthew Berriman Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are infected with the whipwormTrichuris trichiura. Novel treatments are urgently needed as current drugs, such as albendazole, have relatively low efficacy. We have investigated whether drugs approved for other human diseases could be repurposed as novel anti-whipworm drugs. In a previous comparative genomics a...

< i > De novo < /i > assembled mitogenome analysis of < i > Trichuris trichiura < /i > from Korean individuals using nanopore-based long-read sequencing technology
In this study, we got threede novo assembled mitogenomes ofT.trichiura isolated from Korean individuals. These circular complete mitogenomes ofT.trichiura are 14,508 bp, 14,441 bp, and 14,440 bp in length. A total of 37 predicted genes were identified consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNAs) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes (rrnS andrrnL), and two non-coding regions. Interestingly, the assembled mitogenome has up to six times longer AT-rich regions than previous reference sequences, thus proving the advantage of long-read sequencing in resolving unreported non-coding regions. Furthermore, ...

Schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases and sanitation in Latin America and the Caribbean: a systematic reviewRelaci ón entre la prevalencia de esquistosomiasis y geohelmintiasis y las condiciones sanitarias en América Latina y el Caribe: una revisión sistemática
CONCLUSION: There is a clear need to expand research on the association between household and collective health conditions and parasitic diseases for all endemic countries in LAC to support environmental strategies to control these diseases.PMID:37609526 | PMC:PMC10441557 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.111 (Source: Pan American Journal of Public Health)
