Thyroid medication has no effect on death rates in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism
Treating subclinical hypothyroidism with levothyroxine has no effect on overall mortality rates, according to research. Subclinical hypothyroidism is a mild form of underactive thyroid disease where patients have raised levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) but a normal concentration of free thyroid hormone. Study Opens Door For Additional Treatment Option For Hypothyroidism
Desiccated thyroid extract (DTE), derived from crushed preparations of animal thyroid glands, is a safe and effective alternative to standard T4 therapy in hypothyroid patients, a new study finds. The results were presented at The Endocrine Society's 95th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. In adults, untreated hypothyroidism leads to poor mental and physical performance.
