Gender affirming care - a magical treatment that significantly reduces suicides?
That title is a bit editorialized. But, I was having a discussion with a friend's spouse about some the gender stuff. I don't want to crudely summarize or strawman their perspective but in short, they seem to think that transition, along with gender affirming care, is a bit of a panacea when it comes to this population, it it comes down to dichotomy between gender affirming care or death. This kind of got me thinking about how the general public views gender affirming care and it also got... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

New requirement for psych admission: Lipid Panel
Guy BIBPD for supposed homocidal/suicidal ideation, tele-psych screener (the low IQ "mental health counselor) supposedly already screened him in jail but needed medical clearance for psych admit. Pt denies SI/HI to me but whatever. Quick typical workup normal and I clear him. Psych calls back and they want a lipid panel before they accept to an inpatient hospital. Try to explain that this is tiny hospital and that's a sendout with 3 day turnaround, plus we wouldn't get paid for it... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Body modification & risk of self harm
By body modification I mean things like piercings, tattoos, and some corsetry (to a degree). I had a rather bemusing conversation with a social worker acquaintance of mine, who maintains the position that any, or all of the aforementioned activities immediately deems a person in their care as a 'high risk' for self harm and/or suicidal behaviour. Of course I immediately dismissed this point of view as complete balderdash, especially considering I have several piercings, a tattoo on my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Psychiatry as a Specialty Choice
When I was growing up, I had always thought I'd want to be a psychiatrist. I then experienced significant emotional and, at times, physical abuse at the hands of a family member, and that family member ultimately committed suicide. This whole situation is incredibly complex and not really something that I should get into here. In any case, this led me to believe that I should not go into psychiatry for multiple reasons. The first is that I was worried the emotional baggage that I received... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How to avoid scam in GP jobs
Hello this thread is for GPs to raise awareness among them against scam jobs; this thread will be obviously severely attacked by some DSOs, owners and specialists who try to make the GP a cheap, ugly, limited and by all means not rewarding job. This behavior in my opinion has been linked to some of the suicidal cases that I have heard about and knew myself and so please GPs this is a big deal. In fact, I really belive that there should be an organization for GPs only to defend their rights... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
