An Appraisal of Using Opioids in Patients with Opioid Use Disorder
J Am Podiatr Med Assoc. 2023 May-Jun;113(3):22-150. doi: 10.7547/22-150.ABSTRACTPodiatric physicians have come to realize that opioid use disorder (OUD) is a public health crisis causing morbidity, mortality, lost productivity, and legal cost in the United States. Opioid analgesics are efficient first-line pain relievers for acute and chronic lower-extremity pain syndrome. Perioperative pain management strategies have been proposed using opioid stewardship, but there are few standardized protocols to guide podiatric medical providers treating patients with OUD. First, we describe the pharmacology of therapeutic agents used...

Disparities in Emergency Department Naloxone and Buprenorphine Initiation
Introduction:Prescribing of buprenorphine and naloxone in the emergency department (ED) has been shown to be an effective intervention. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of prescribing of naloxone and buprenorphine and the sub-groups that may be more or less likely to receive treatment. Methods:We used a national electronic health record database to identify patients with opioid poisoning or overdose presenting between January 2019 –December 2021. Patients who were prescribed naloxone or buprenorphine were identified in this dataset and then further segmented based on selfidentified gender, age, rac...

Patients Who Take Medication for OUD Found Less Likely to Seek Hospital Care, Study Finds
Medication for opioid use disorder —which include buprenorphine, methadone, and extended-release naltrexone—is known to improve health outcomes in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). Areport published Monday inPsychiatric Services now suggests that patients who take their medication for OUD (MOUD) more frequently are less likely to end up hospitalized or in the emergency room than those who take their MOUD less frequently. These findings, as reported by Manesh Gopaldas, M.D., of New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University Irving Medical Center and colleagues were based on a secondary analysis of da...

Impact of Medication-Based Treatment on Health Care Utilization Among Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: These findings reinforce the understanding that greater MOUD adherence is associated with reduced usage of high-cost health services and increased usage of outpatient care. The results further suggest the need for enhanced access to MOUD and for interventions that improve adherence.PMID:37337675 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20220549 (Source: Psychiatric Services)
