Cellular Stress Responses against Coronavirus Infection: A Means of the Innate Antiviral Defense
J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 8;34(1):1-10. doi: 10.4014/jmb.2307.07038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCellular stress responses are crucial for maintaining cellular homeostasis. Stress granules (SGs), activated by eIF2α kinases in response to various stimuli, play a pivotal role in dealing with diverse stress conditions. Viral infection, as one kind of cellular stress, triggers specific cellular programs aimed at overcoming virus-induced stresses. Recent studies have revealed that virus-derived stress responses are tightly linked to the host's antiviral innate immunity. Virus infection-induced SGs act as platforms for...

First cases of SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.86 in Denmark, 2023
We describe 10 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant BA.2.86 detected in Denmark, including molecular characteristics and results from wastewater surveillance that indicate that the variant is circulating in the country at a low level. This new variant with many spike gene mutations was classified as a variant under monitoring by the World Health Organization on 17 August 2023. Further global monitoring of COVID-19, BA.2.86 and other SARS-CoV-2 variants is highly warranted.PMID:37676147 | PMC:PMC10486197 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.36.2300460

Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogel Microcapsules Harnessing the COVID-19 Immune Response for Cancer Therapeutics
We present the development of stimuli-responsive microcapsules, loaded with a viral immunogenetic agent, harnessing the immune response against the Coronavirus Disease 2019, COVID-19, to selectively attack liver cancer cells (hepatoma) or recognize breast cancer or hepatoma, by expression of green fluorescence protein, GFP. The pH-responsive microcapsules, modified with DNA-tetrahedra nanostructures, increased hepatoma permeation by 50%. Incorporation of a GFP-encoding lentivirus vector inside the tumor-targeting pH-stimulated miRNA-triggered and Alpha-fetoprotein-dictated microcapsules enables the demonstration of neoplas...

Elevated tacrolimus levels among COVID-19 kidney transplant recipients are associated with worse disease severity and clinical outcomes
CONCLUSION: Elevated tacrolimus levels occur in many renal transplant recipients with moderate to severe COVID-19 and are associated with worse clinical outcomes. Close drug monitoring is crucial to avoid toxicities and minimize over-immunosuppression complications.PMID:37675489 | DOI:10.5414/CN111137

Awareness and attitudes of elderly Southeast Asian adults towards telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Our results showed poor overall awareness of the range of telehealth services available among elderly Asian individuals, with many harbouring erroneous views regarding their use. These data suggest that public health education campaigns are needed to improve awareness of and correct negative perceptions towards telehealth services in elderly Asians.PMID:37675683 | DOI:10.4103/singaporemedj.SMJ-2022-117

Rapid classification of SARS-CoV-2 variant strains using machine learning-based label-free SERS strategy
In this study, the label-free surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms provide a potential solution for accurate identification of SARS-CoV-2 variants. We establish a SERS spectral database of SARS-CoV-2 variants and demonstrate that a diagnostic classifier using a logistic regression (LR) algorithm can provide accurate results within 10 min. Our classifier achieves 100% accuracy for Beta (B.1.351/501Y.V2), Delta (B.1.617), Wuhan (COVID-19) and Omicron (BA.1) variants. In addition, our method achieves 100% accuracy in blind tests of positive and negative human nasal...
