Transcription Factor JunB Suppresses Hepatitis C Virus Replication
Kobe J Med Sci. 2023 Aug 31;69(3):E86-E95.ABSTRACTWe previously reported that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection activates the reactive oxygen species (ROS)/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway. Activation of JNK contributes to the development of liver diseases, including metabolic disorders, steatosis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. JNK is known to have numerous target genes, including JunB, a member of activator protein-1 transcription factor family. However, the roles of JunB in the HCV life cycle and HCV-associated pathogenesis remain unclear. To clarify a physiological role of JunB in HCV infe...

An alarming surge of scrub typhus cases presenting as acute encephalitis in children
We present four cases of scrub typhus with acute encephalitis, including one with multiorgan failure and another serologically proven co-infection with Hepatitis C. Treatment of scrub typhus is not, however, so difficult, so its early diagnosis is paramount.PMID:37644872 | DOI:10.1177/00494755231194197

Seroprevalence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in North Korean Defectors Residing in Korea
CONCLUSION: This is the first prospective study to investigate the prevalence rate of HCV infection among North Korean defectors residing in South Korea. As North Korean defectors are a vulnerable group concerning HCV infection, they may benefit from HCV screening policies and educational interventions for HCV infection.PMID:37644684 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e270

Survey of blood collection and transfusion practices among institutions in Africa
This study highlights significant variability and restrictions in blood product availability, pre-transfusion testing, and blood donor infectious disease testing across Africa. Further studies are needed to ascertain barriers to improving blood donor availability, blood product safety, and infectious disease testing.PMID:37646070 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17501
