Non-traditional lipid parameters as potential predictors of carotid plaque vulnerability and stenosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that non-traditional lipid parameters (LP-C, non-HDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, CRI-I, and CRI-II) were potential predictors of carotid plaque vulnerability in patients with AIS. However, no significant correlation was observed between TG/HDL-C and AIP. RLP-C, non-HDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, CRI-I, CRI-II, and AIP were closely related to the degree of carotid plaque stenosis. Non-traditional lipid parameters can be used as novel biomarkers of carotid plaque vulnerability and stenosis.PMID:36301362 | DOI:10.1007/s10072-022-06472-3

Advances in Noninvasive Carotid Wall Imaging with Ultrasound: A Narrative Review
J Clin Med. 2022 Oct 20;11(20):6196. doi: 10.3390/jcm11206196.ABSTRACTCarotid atherosclerosis is a major cause for stroke, with significant associated disease burden morbidity and mortality in Western societies. Diagnosis, grading and follow-up of carotid atherosclerotic disease relies on imaging, specifically ultrasound (US) as the initial modality of choice. Traditionally, the degree of carotid lumen stenosis was considered the sole risk factor to predict brain ischemia. However, modern research has shown that a variety of other imaging biomarkers, such as plaque echogenicity, surface morphology, intraplaque neovasculari...

Attention-Based UNet Deep Learning Model for Plaque Segmentation in Carotid Ultrasound for Stroke Risk Stratification: An Artificial Intelligence Paradigm
This study proposes an attention-channel-based UNet deep learning (DL) model that identifies the carotid plaques in the internal carotid artery (ICA) and common carotid artery (CCA) images. Our experiments consist of 970 ICA images from the UK, 379 CCA images from diabetic Japanese patients, and 300 CCA images from post-menopausal women from Hong Kong. We combined both CCA images to form an integrated database of 679 images. A rotation transformation technique was applied to 679 CCA images, doubling the database for the experiments. The cross-validation K5 (80% training: 20% testing) protocol was applied for accuracy deter...

A narrative review on the application of high-intensity focused ultrasound for the treatment of occlusive and thrombotic arterial disease
CONCLUSIONS: In current preclinical and clinical data, the safety and efficacy of HIFU shows great promise in the treatment of atherosclerotic arterial disease. Future focused studies are warranted to guide the refinement of HIFU settings for more widespread adoption of this technology.PMID:36276806 | PMC:PMC9579503 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvssci.2022.08.001

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound: Clinical applications from neurological to cardiological setting
J Clin Ultrasound. 2022 Oct;50(8):1212-1223. doi: 10.1002/jcu.23344.ABSTRACTTranscranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography is a rapid, noninvasive, real-time, and low-cost imaging technique. It is performed with a low-frequency (2 MHz) probe in order to evaluate the cerebral blood flow (CBF) and its pathological alterations, through specific acoustic windows. In the recent years, TCD use has been expanded across many clinical settings. Actually, the most widespread indication for TCD exam is represented by the diagnosis of paradoxical embolism, due to patent foramen ovale, in young patients with cryptogenic stroke. In addition...

MicroRNA and Hemostasis Profile of Carotid Atherosclerosis
We described the miRNA and hemostasis profile of patients with moderate and advanced stages of carotid atherosclerosis and elucidated potential correlations with hemostatic activation. A prospective case-control study included 61 patients with evidence of carotid atherosclerosis (via ultrasound). The study population was divided into groups depending on the degree of carotid artery stenosis: 60% or more (advanced) and <60% (moderate). All patients underwent the following blood tests: general blood test, hemostatic parameters and microRNA. Extraction of microRNA was performed using Leukocyte RNA Purification Kit (NOR...

Carotid contrast-enhanced ultrasonography combined with sirtuin-3 in the diagnosis of plaques in carotid atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: A low expression of SIRT3 predicted a higher risk for unstable plaques in CAS patients. The combination of CEUS and SIRT3 is a potential strategy for diagnosing unstable plaques.PMID:36083252 | DOI:10.17219/acem/152471

The Relationship between Serum CXCL8 and ET-1 Expression Levels and Sepsis Complicated with Heart Failure
CONCLUSION: The expression levels of serum CXCL8 and ET-1 in sepsis patients with heart failure are significantly increased, and both are risk factors for heart failure in sepsis patients.PMID:36065195 | PMC:PMC9440819 | DOI:10.1155/2022/8570486

Far wall plaque segmentation and area measurement in common and internal carotid artery ultrasound using U-series architectures: An unseen Artificial Intelligence paradigm for stroke risk assessment
Comput Biol Med. 2022 Aug 28;149:106017. doi: 10.1016/j.compbiomed.2022.106017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke risk assessment using deep learning (DL) requires automated, accurate, and real-time risk assessment while ensuring compact model size. Previous DL paradigms suffered from challenges like memory size, low speed, and complex in nature lacking multi-ethnic, and multi-institution databases. This research segments and measures the area of the plaque far wall of the common carotid (CCA) and internal carotid arteries (ICA) in B-mode ultrasound using four types of solo, namely, UNet, UNet+, UNet++, and UNet+++, and...

Association of metabolic syndrome with carotid atherosclerosis in low-income Chinese individuals: A population-based study
CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals aged 45 years or more, we confirmed MetS and its components were associated with carotid atherosclerosis in a low-income population of northern China. The presence of MetS and a higher number of MetS components exacerbated the risk of carotid atherosclerosis; among the five MetS components, high blood pressure was associated with the greatest risk. Targeted atherosclerosis prevention and intervention should include identification and treatment of MetS, especially high blood pressure.PMID:36061552 | PMC:PMC9437543 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.943281
