Plaque Evaluation by Ultrasound and Transcriptomics Reveals BCLAF1 as a Regulator of Smooth Muscle Cell Lipid Transdifferentiation in Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Plaque echogenicity correlated with enrichment of distinct molecular pathways and identified BCLAF1, previously not described in atherosclerosis, as the most significant gene. Functionally, BCLAF1 seems necessary for survival and transdifferentiation of SMCs into a macrophage-like phenotype. The role of BCLAF1 in plaque vulnerability should be further evaluated.PMID:35321563 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.121.317018

Stroke risk stratification in elderly patients with comorbid sarcopenia and atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: It is important to take into account not only traditional risk factors in the overall assessment of cardiovascular risk as well as therapeutic and preventive measures planning in elderly patients, but also pay attention to body composition since modern diagnostic systems may be not sensitive enough to identify high-risk patients with comorbid atherosclerosis and sarcopenia.PMID:35318840 | DOI:10.17116/jnevro202212203231

Bubble Test and Carotid Ultrasound to Guide Indication of Transesophageal Echocardiography in Young Patients With Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Bubble test and carotid ultrasound could be used for the individual decision for/against TEE in patients with cryptogenic stroke ≤60 years. If they are unremarkable, TEE can be omitted with high safety regarding secondary prevention. If bubble test is positive and/or carotid ultrasound shows atherosclerosis, TEE should be carried out if PFO or aortic atheroma are potentially relevant for further patient management.PMID:35309558 | PMC:PMC8931264 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.836609

Association between hemoglobin A < sub > 1c < /sub > and asymptomatic carotid intima-media thickness in middle-aged and elderly populations without diabetes
CONCLUSION: In this large-scale and cross-sectional study, high-normal HbA1c was associated with the risk of increased asymptomatic cIMT in a rural Chinese population without diabetes, especially in individuals aged <60 years.PMID:35300884 | DOI:10.1016/j.numecd.2022.02.003

Association of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness with Brain MRI Markers in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Neurocognitive Study (ARIC-NCS)
CONCLUSION: Over a median follow-up of 21 years, greater midlife cIMT and presence of carotid plaque were associated with smaller deep gray matter volume and cortical volume in a meta ROI involving temporal and parietal lobe regions typically involved in neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer's disease, in later life. Contrary to our hypothesis, associations between measures of arterial injury and markers of vascular brain injury were null.PMID:35193028 | DOI:10.1016/j.jstrokecerebrovasdis.2022.106388

Rationale and design of the Brazilian Diabetes Study: a prospective cohort of type 2 diabetes
CONCLUSION: The BDS will be the first large population-based cohort dedicated to the identification of clinical phenotypes of T2D at higher risk of cardiovascular events. Data derived from this study will provide valuable information on risk estimation and prevention of cardiovascular and other diabetes-related events.PMID:35174749 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2022.2043658

Association of Carotid Plaque Morphology and Glycemic and Lipid Parameters in the Northern Manhattan Study
Front Cardiovasc Med. 2022 Jan 24;9:793755. doi: 10.3389/fcvm.2022.793755. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTLow Gray-Scale Median (GSM) index is an ultrasonographic parameter of soft, lipid rich plaque morphology that has been associated with stroke and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We sought to explore the contribution of the modifiable and not-modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (RFs) to vulnerable plaque morphology measured by the low GSM index. A total of 1,030 stroke-free community dwelling individuals with carotid plaques present (mean age, 71.8 ± 9.1; 58% women; 56% Hispanic, 20% Non-Hispanic Black, 22% Non-Hispanic Whi...

Analysis of Carotid Ultrasound Screening of High-Risk Groups of Stroke Based on Big Data Technology
J Healthc Eng. 2022 Jan 25;2022:6363691. doi: 10.1155/2022/6363691. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTIn order to understand detection of carotid atherosclerosis in the screening of high-risk stroke populations in a certain area of China, we have analyzed related risk factors of CAS. In accordance with the requirements of the "2015 Technical Plan for the Screening and Intervention Projects for High-Risk Stroke Populations," a cluster sampling method was used to select 4532 (number of screened persons from 2015 to 2021) permanent residents over 41 years old () in Shaheying Town, Liulin Town, Chenggu County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Pr...

Point-of-care ultrasound for stroke patients in the emergency room
J Med Ultrason (2001). 2022 Feb 3. doi: 10.1007/s10396-021-01185-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStroke requires rapid determination of the cause to provide timely and appropriate initial management. Various ultrasonographic techniques have been evaluated as ways to determine the cause of stroke; among them, carotid artery ultrasonography is particularly useful since it provides considerable information within a short time period when used to evaluate a specific site. In the emergency room, carotid artery ultrasonography can be used to diagnose internal carotid artery stenosis, predict an occluded vessel, and infer the ca...
