Associations Among Diffusion Tensor Image Along the Perivascular Space (DTI-ALPS), Enlarged Perivascular Space (ePVS), and Cognitive Functions in Asymptomatic Patients With Carotid Plaque
Conclusions: ALPS-index reflects the glymphatic system of the brain, which is associated with early high-risk cerebrovascular diseases. There may be damage in the function of the glymphatic system which induces the expansion of the perivascular space (PVS) in the BG in individuals with carotid plaque.PMID:35082748 | PMC:PMC8785797 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2021.789918

Omentin Is Independently Associated with Stroke Severity and Ipsilateral Carotid Artery Stenosis in Patients with Acute Cerebral Ischemia
J Clin Med. 2021 Dec 11;10(24):5797. doi: 10.3390/jcm10245797.ABSTRACTMounting evidence indicates an association between adipokines and inflammation-related atherosclerosis. Here, we sought to investigate the association of vaspin and omentin with clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with acute cerebral ischemia (ACI). Consecutive ACI patients were evaluated within 24 h from symptom-onset. Stroke aetiology was classified using TOAST criteria. Adipokines were assayed using quantikine enzyme immunoassay commercially available kits. Stroke severity was assessed by NIHSS-score, and ipsilateral carotid stenosis (â‰...

Abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound screening in men with risk factors in Primary Care
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of aneurysms in our sample was 2.6%, which was lower than expected. The wide use of ultrasound and its progressive generalisation in the Primary Care setting should lead to a decrease in the number of undiagnosed AAA.PMID:34920344 | DOI:10.1016/j.aprim.2021.102234

Stratification of carotid atheromatous plaque using interpretable deep learning methods on B-mode ultrasound images
Annu Int Conf IEEE Eng Med Biol Soc. 2021 Nov;2021:3902-3905. doi: 10.1109/EMBC46164.2021.9630402.ABSTRACTCarotid atherosclerosis is the major cause of ischemic stroke resulting in significant rates of mortality and disability annually. Early diagnosis of such cases is of great importance, since it enables clinicians to apply a more effective treatment strategy. This paper introduces an interpretable classification approach of carotid ultrasound images for the risk assessment and stratification of patients with carotid atheromatous plaque. To address the highly imbalanced distribution of patients between the symptomatic an...

Combining ultrasound with bio-indicators reveals progression of carotid stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: High-risk hs-CRP and hypoechoic plaque are independently associated with CAS progression. The progression of carotid stenosis is associated with a high risk of cerebrovascular events.PMID:34872279 | DOI:10.21037/apm-21-2666

Multicomponent material property characterization of atherosclerotic human carotid arteries through a Bayesian Optimization based inverse finite element approach
CONCLUSION: The developed iFEM approach combined with the inverted GP model successfully predicted component-wise material properties of intact atherosclerotic human carotids ex-vivo under physiological-like loading conditions.SIGNIFICANCE: We developed a novel iFEM framework for the nonlinear, component-wise material characterization of atherosclerotic arteries and utilized it to obtain human atherosclerotic carotid material properties. The developed iFEM framework has great potential to be advanced for patient-specific in-vivo application.PMID:34864574 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmbbm.2021.104996

Automated deep learning-based paradigm for high-risk plaque detection in B-mode common carotid ultrasound scans: an asymptomatic Japanese cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: The proposed study demonstrates a fast, accurate, and reliable solution for early detection and quantification of plaque lesions in common carotid artery ultrasound scans. The system runs on a test US image in < 1 second, proving overall performance to be clinically reliable.PMID:34825801 | DOI:10.23736/S0392-9590.21.04771-4
