Endocan is Related to Increased Cardiovascular Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients
Conclusion: Endocan was the independent predictor for moderate and high estimated risks (i.e., nonfatal and fatal CHD and nonfatal stroke risk scores) in T2D patients. When included in models with sex and obesity indices endocan demonstrated good clinical accuracy in discriminating T2D patients with high risk for nonfatal and fatal eCHD and nonfatal stroke risk from those patients with low risk.PMID:37279462 | DOI:10.1089/met.2023.0050

Association of bone turnover biomarkers with severe intracranial and extracranial artery stenosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
CONCLUSION: BTM levels were found to be independent risk factors for severe intracranial and extracranial artery stenosis and were differentially associated with glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with T2DM. Therefore, BTMs may be promising biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for artery stenosis.PMID:37273245 | PMC:PMC10236991 | DOI:10.4239/wjd.v14.i5.594

Comparison of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitor and Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitor on the Risks of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation, Stroke and Mortality in Diabetic Patients: A Propensity Score-Matched Study in Hong Kong
ConclusionsBased on real-world data of type 2 diabetic patients in Hong Kong, SGLT2I use was associated with lower risk of incident AF, stroke/transient ischemic attack, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality outcomes compared to DPP4I use.

Association of Alternative Anticoagulation Strategies and Outcomes in Patients With Ischemic Stroke While Taking a Direct Oral Anticoagulant
This study provides Class II evidence that in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation suffering an ischemic stroke while being treated with a DOAC, continuing treatment with that DOAC is more effective at preventing recurrent ischemic stroke than switching to a different DOAC or to warfarin.PMID:37225430 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000207422

Age at diagnosis, diabetes duration and the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Age at diagnosis, diabetes duration, hypertension and hyperlipidemia were independent risks of CVD. Longest (>15 years) diabetes duration increased the high risk of ten-year ASCVD prediction among Chinese patients with DM. It's urgent to emphasize the importance of age at diagnosis and diabetes duration to improve primary complication of diabetes.PMID:37223032 | PMC:PMC10200881 | DOI:10.3389/fendo.2023.1131395

The epidemiology, mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in adult patients with HIV
This article discusses the complex interactions involving HIV infection, the novel and traditional risk factors for CVD, and the antiretroviral HIV therapies which can contribute to CVD in HIV-infected people. In addition, the treatment of HIV+ patients with acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiomyopathy/heart failure are discussed. Current recommended ART and their major side effects are summarized in table format. All medical personnel must be aware of the increasing incidence of CVD on the morbidity and mortality in HIV infected patients and must be watchful for the presence of CVD in their patients with HIV.PM...

Risk Factors of Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Disease in Geriatric Evaluated Using Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) Measurement, the First Indonesian Population Study
Int J Angiol. 2022 Jun 28;32(2):95-99. doi: 10.1055/s-0042-1750040. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTCarotid artery disease in geriatric is one of the important etiologies of stroke, which topped the cause of mortality in Indonesia. Specific prevention should be done as early as asymptomatic disease occurred. Initial assessment can be performed using ultrasound by measuring the intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery, which can evaluate earlier progression of the atherosclerosis process. Unfortunately, we do not have risk factors categorization that show us which geriatric population fall under high-risk stratification ...

Acrolein: formation, health hazards and its controlling by dietary polyphenols
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2023 May 19:1-14. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2023.2214625. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcrolein, a highly reactive toxic aldehyde, is a common dietary and environmental contaminant which can also be generated endogenously. Exposure to acrolein has been positively associated with some pathological conditions, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. At the cellular level, acrolein induces various harmful effects, particularly protein adduction and oxidative damages. Polyphenols are a group of secondary plant metabolites ubiquitously presented in fruits, vegetables, an...

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Carotid Artery Stenosis (CAS) Among Cardiac Surgery Patients
CONCLUSION: This study shows a high prevalence of CAS among cardiac surgery patients. In addition, older age, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension were found to be major risk factors for CAS. Gender and weight status were not associated with CAS. Preoperative carotid duplex scan is a useful exam to identify CAS among cardiac surgery patients and, therefore, to predict and reduce postoperative neurological complications.PMID:37200653 | PMC:PMC10186855 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.37634

Correlation Between Chronic Periodontitis and Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis
Cureus. 2023 Mar 21;15(3):e36476. doi: 10.7759/cureus.36476. eCollection 2023 Mar.ABSTRACTPeriodontal disease is associated with many systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, stroke, and pulmonary diseases. Interestingly, recent literature suggests that periodontal disease might be a risk factor for various cancers such as lung, colon, oesophageal, head, and neck cancers. However, the precise mechanistic link is lacking. Hence, in this meta-analysis, we aimed to investigate the correlation between periodontal disease and lung cancer in periodontally diseased patients. Data wer...
