Neuroprotective effect of aloe emodin against Huntington's disease-like symptoms in R6/1 transgenic mice
Food Funct. 2023 May 16. doi: 10.1039/d3fo00156c. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAloe emodin is a natural anthraquinone derived from aloe or rhubarb, showing anti-renal fibrosis, anti-atherosclerosis and anti-cancer effects. Aloe emodin also shows neuroprotective effects in ischemic stroke rats. Naturally, anthraquinone derivatives generally have the effect of inhibiting the transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) pathway. There is an increase in the calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) and TGF-β1 levels in both Huntington's disease (HD) patients' brains and HD transgenic mice. Thus, we hypothesized tha...

Endothelial Specific Deletion of Autotaxin Improves Stroke Outcomes
This study suggests that endothelial-specific ATX leads to increased LPA in the brain vasculature following ischemic-reperfusion and ultimately disrupts vascular permeability, resulting in adverse stroke outcomes.PMID:36766854 | DOI:10.3390/cells12030511

Net benefit of diagnostic tests for multistate diseases: an indicator variables approach
J Biopharm Stat. 2023 Jan 29:1-28. doi: 10.1080/10543406.2023.2169928. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA limitation of the common measures of diagnostic test performance, such as sensitivity and specificity, is that they do not consider the relative importance of false negative and false positive test results, which are likely to have different clinical consequences. Therefore, the use of classification or prediction measures alone to compare diagnostic tests or biomarkers can be inconclusive for clinicians. Comparing tests on net benefit can be more conclusive because clinical consequences of misdiagnoses are considered. Th...

A review on the role of MEG8 lncRNA in human disorders
Cancer Cell Int. 2022 Sep 16;22(1):285. doi: 10.1186/s12935-022-02705-9.ABSTRACTMaternally expressed 8 (MEG8) is a long non-coding RNA which is expressed in the nucleus. It is highly expressed in adrenal, placenta and brain. Recent studies have shown contribution of MEG8 in different disorders ranging from neoplastic ones to diabetic nephropathy, atherosclerosis, ischemic stroke, trophoblast dysfunction and abortion, Henoch-Schonlein purpura and osteoarthritis. It has an oncogenic role in the development of lung, pancreatic and liver cancer. In the current review, we summarize the role of this lncRNA in mentioned disorders...

Involvement of Ceramide Metabolism in Cerebral Ischemia
Front Mol Biosci. 2022 Apr 20;9:864618. doi: 10.3389/fmolb.2022.864618. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke, caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain and subsequent neuronal death, represents one of the main causes of disability in worldwide. Although reperfusion therapies have shown efficacy in a limited number of patients with acute ischemic stroke, neuroprotective drugs and recovery strategies have been widely assessed, but none of them have been successful in clinical practice. Therefore, the search for new therapeutic approaches is still necessary. Sphingolipids consist of a family of lipidic molecul...

Aspirin resistance and blood biomarkers in predicting ischemic stroke recurrence: An exploratory study
CONCLUSIONS: Majority of patients with recurrent stroke were elderly (>60 years), hypertensive, and non-compliant with aspirin. Aspirin resistance was an important factor in patients with antiplatelet compliance. Inflammatory biomarkers hsCRP, PLA2, and TNF-α were found to be significantly elevated in patients compared to controls.PMID:35372727 | PMC:PMC8973447 | DOI:10.4103/bc.bc_75_21

Recurrent Strokes as the First Presentation of Occult Pancreatic Cancer; Trousseau Syndrome: A Case Report
We present a case of a 64-year-old female with recurrent ischemic stroke of unknown cause and involving different arterial territories, who was discovered to have metastatic pancreatic cancer. The initial workup with brain imaging revealed multiple acute/subacute ischemic strokes and a negative cardiac assessment. Accordingly, she underwent a whole-body positron emission tomography-computed tomography which revealed a hypermetabolic mass lesion in the pancreaticoduodenal area. Our case indicates that cancer-associated stroke should be seriously evaluated. It demonstrates the critical nature of contemplating hidden cancer i...

Diversity of Organism-Wide and Organ-Specific Endothelial Cells
AbstractPurpose of ReviewEndothelial cells are of great importance in many types of diseases including the coronary artery diseases in heart and stroke in brain. In this review, we explore the heterogeneity among endothelial cells from an organism-wide, organ-specific, and healthy versus disease perspective.Recent FindingsRecent studies addressing the cellular heterogeneity between arterial versus venous endothelial cells (ECs) have revealed that arterial ECs have tighter junctions, a decreased immune response, anticoagulant properties while veins have both anticoagulant and procoagulant properties. Blood and lymphatic ECs...

Clinical relevance of biomarkers for the identification of patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaque: Potential role and limitations of cysteine protease legumain
Asymptomatic carotid artery stenoses are common in the elderly population [1]. The presence of a carotid plaque is a major risk factor for the occurrence of athero-embolic stroke [2], and is associated with a higher incidence of silent brain ischemia [3]. Biomarkers, in addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, can help identify patients at risk of bearing an asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis, leading to the implementation of effective ultrasonographic screening programs [4]. In particular, inflammatory regulators, such as interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor- α, were shown to predict the presence and cha...

Cancer-related multiple brain infarctions caused by Trousseau syndrome in a patient with metastatic colon cancer: a case report.
Abstract Thromboembolism that occurs in association with a malignant tumor is known as Trousseau syndrome. We herein present a case of Trousseau syndrome during systemic chemotherapy for metastatic colon cancer. A 65-year-old man with multiple liver metastases underwent primary tumor resection and systemic chemotherapy. Multiple brain infarctions were detected by magnetic resonance imaging immediately after first-line chemotherapy, which was deemed ineffective. There was no evidence of cardioembolic stroke or carotid atherosclerosis. Although the patient was initially asymptomatic, he subsequently developed paraly...
