Rates and reasons for hospital readmission after acute ischemic stroke in a US population-based cohort
We examined readmissions rates, diagnoses at readmission, and risk factors associated with readmission following acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in a large United States (US) administrative database. Using the 201 9 Nationwide Readmissions Database, we identified adults discharged with AIS (ICD-10-CM I63*) as the principal diagnosis. Survival analysis with Weibull accelerated failure time regression was used to examine variables associated with hospital readmission. In 2019, 273,811 of 285,451 AIS patients su rvived their initial hospitalization. Of these, 60,831 (22.2%) were readmitted within 2019. Based on Kaplan Meyer analy...

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Admission and Mortality Among Patients With Severe Emergency Diseases at Emergency Departments in Korea in 2020: Registry Data From the National Emergency Department Information System
J Korean Med Sci. 2023 Jul 31;38(30):e243. doi: 10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e243.ABSTRACTWe aimed to investigate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on admissions of patients with acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and severe trauma, and their excess mortality in emergency departments (EDs) in South Korea using registry data from the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) for patients attending EDs of regional and local emergency medical centers. During the outbreak period of 2020, there were 350,698 ED visits, which was lower than the total in 2019 (392,627 visits). Multiple logisti...

Systemic immune-inflammation index as a predictor of prognosis after carotid artery stenting compared with C-reactive protein
This study was a single-center retrospective investigation. Overall, 129 patients who underwent CAS were categorized into tertiles based on their SII levels. We primarily investigated the long-term major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and secondarily the in-hospital and long-term stroke incidence, as well as all-cause death. ResultsThe in-hospital stroke rate tended to increase with a rise in SII (P = 0.13). Over the 5-year follow-up period, the Kaplan –Meier overall incidence of MACCE was 9.3%, 16.3%, and 39.5% in the lowest to highest tertiles, respectively (log-rank trend test,P647) was a predictor...

Sociodemographic disparities in concomitant left atrial appendage occlusion during cardiac valve operations
by Ayesha P. Ng, Nikhil Chervu, Yas Sanaiha, Amulya Vadlakonda, Elsa Kronen, Peyman Benharash BackgroundSociodemographic disparities in atrial fibrillation (AF) management and thromboembolic prophylaxis have previously been reported, which may involve inequitable access to left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) during cardiac surgery. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of LAAO utilization with sex, race, and hospital region among patients with AF undergoing heart valve operations. MethodsAdults with AF undergoing valve replacement/repair in the 2012 –2019 National Inpatient Sample were identified and str...

Effect of an extension speech training program based on Chinese idioms in patients with post-stroke non-fluent aphasia: A randomized controlled trial
by Sun Pei, Li Weiwei, Zhang Mengqin, He Xiaojun BackgroundChinese idioms have potential to act as preliminary training material in studies on post-stroke aphasia. ObjectiveTo explore an extension speech training program that takes Chinese idioms as context and expands them into characters, words, sentences and paragraphs and evaluate the effects of this program in patients with post-stroke non-fluent aphasia. MethodsThis was a randomized controlled trial. We recruited patients with post-stroke non-fluent aphasia from the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from January 2021 to January 2022. Participants were randomly assi...

Contemporary oral anticoagulant therapy of patients with atrial fibrillation in China: Status, obstacles, and strategies for improvement
Biosci Trends. 2022 Oct 30. doi: 10.5582/bst.2022.01278. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtrial fibrillation (AF) and subsequent stroke and death have become major public health problems in China. Oral anticoagulant (OAC) forms the backbone of prevention of AF-related stroke. However, the quality of OAC use in AF patients in China is not clear. The focus of this narrative review is to summarize the current status of OAC therapy in China and compare it with the studies conducted internationally. In general, most data of OAC use in China were reported around 10-50%, with an increasing proportion of high-risk patients receiving...
