Association between electronic nicotine delivery systems use and risk of stroke: a meta-analysis of 1,024,401 participants
CONCLUSIONS: The ENDS usage appears to be associated with a higher risk of stroke compared to non-use, whereas there was no association between former ENDS use and the risk of stroke.PMID:37732043 | PMC:PMC10507757 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/171473

Analysis of 622 paediatric hospitalisations due to arterial ischaemic stroke in Poland - National Health Fund registry-based study from 2011 to 2020
CONCLUSIONS: Data from the NHF registry proved that AIS occurs more often in boys than in girls and is more common in adolescents (15-18 years) than in younger children.PMID:37732035 | PMC:PMC10507785 | DOI:10.5114/aoms/151684

The predominant PAR4 variant in individuals of African ancestry worsens murine and human stroke outcomes
Protease-activated receptor 4 (PAR4) (gene F2RL3) harbors a functional dimorphism, rs773902 A/G (encoding Thr120/Ala120, respectively) and is associated with greater platelet aggregation. The A allele frequency is more common in Black individuals, and Black individuals have a higher incidence of ischemic stroke than White individuals. However, it is not known whether the A allele is responsible for worse stroke outcomes. To directly test the in vivo effect of this variant on stroke, we generated mice in which F2rl3 was replaced by F2RL3, thereby expressing human PAR4 (hPAR4) with either Thr120 or Ala120. Compared with hPAR...

Report on Cardiovascular Health and Diseases in China 2022: an Updated Summary
Biomed Environ Sci. 2023 Aug 20;36(8):669-701. doi: 10.3967/bes2023.106.ABSTRACTIn the past 30 years, the accessibility and quality index of medical care have made remarkable progress in China, ranking the first among middle-income countries. Many cardiovascular technologies are at or near the world's leading level, and significant progress has been achieved in China solving the problem of "treatment difficulty" of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, due to the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles among Chinese residents, a huge population with CVD risk factors, accelerated population aging, and other reasons, the incide...

Mortality risk after the first occurrence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in the general population: A nationwide cohort study
This study aimed to evaluate mortality risk after the first occurrence of OVCF in the general population using a nationwide dataset from the Korean National Health Insurance System. We identified 291,203 newly diagnosed patients with OVCF and 873,609 patients without OVCF at a ratio of 1:3 matched by sex and age between 2010 and 2012. We investigated the latent characteristics of patients’ demographic information and chronic comorbidities that could affect mortality when diagnosed with OVCF. By comparing the cohort data, the hazar d ratio for subsequent mortality in patients with OVCF was calculated and adjusted based on...

Modeling the public health impact of voxelotor in the management of sickle cell disease in France
The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of voxelotor on the burden of SCD in France using a modeling approach, accounting for its anticipated adoption and diffusion over the next 5 years. We designed a sequential multi-cohort model to project and compare the cumulative incidence of SCD complications over a 20-year time horizon in a world with and without voxelotor. A distribution of patients was simulated across various levels of Hb response based on the phase 3 HO PE trial results, and relative risk reduction was adjusted using published meta-analysis results that projected risk reduction due to a 1 g/dL in...

Galectin-3 promotes brain injury by modulating the phenotype of microglia via binding TLR-4 after intracerebral hemorrhage
CONCLUSIONS: This study proves that Gal-3 is involved in neuroinflammation and nerve damage after ICH. Gal-3 expression should not be encouraged early on to prevent neuroinflammation. which provides a new possibility for clinical treatment for ICH patients.PMID:37698533 | DOI:10.18632/aging.205014
