Stroke care and collaborative academic research in Latin America
CONCLUSIONS: Regional networks foster the conduct of multicenter studies -particularly randomized controlled trials-, even in resource-poor regions. They also contribute to the external validity of international studies and strengthen systems of care, clinical skills, critical thinking, and international knowledge exchange.PMID:36130397 | DOI:10.21149/12803

Thromboembolic events, bleeding, and mortality in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis: a nationwide cohort study
We examined the clinical course of patients with CVT overall and according to age and sex. Using Danish registries, we identified all patients with a first-time primary inpatient diagnosis of CVT from 1996 to 2018 (N = 653, median age 41 years, 67% women) and individuals from the general population, matched on age, sex, and calendar year (N = 65,300). Patients with CVT were at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in other sites, ischemic stroke, major bleeding, and mortality. For both sexes, the increased risks of VTE in other sites were most prominent among the young (18-54 years), while the increased risks of i...

Polymorphism of IL-1B rs16944 (T/C) associated with serum levels of IL-1 β affects seizure susceptibility in ischemic stroke patients
CONCLUSIONS: The IL-1B rs16944 polymorphism had an independent association with seizure susceptibility after ischemic stroke. The mechanism might be associated with the regulation of IL-1β levels.PMID:36089763 | DOI:10.17219/acem/152738

A Mendelian randomization-based exploration of red blood cell distribution width and mean corpuscular volume with risk of hemorrhagic strokes
HGG Adv. 2022 Aug 10;3(4):100135. doi: 10.1016/j.xhgg.2022.100135. eCollection 2022 Oct 13.ABSTRACTRed blood cell distribution width (RCDW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) are associated with different risk factors for hemorrhagic stroke. However, whether RCDW and MCV are causally related to hemorrhagic stroke remains poorly understood. Therefore, we explored the causality between RCDW/MCV and nontraumatic hemorrhagic strokes using Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. We extracted exposure and outcome summary statistics from the UK Biobank and FinnGen. We evaluated the causality of RCDW/MCV on four outcomes (subarachnoi...

Accuracy of machine learning algorithms for the assessment of upper-limb motor impairments in patients with post-stroke hemiparesis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: Automated systems using machine learning algorithms could support therapists in assessing upper extremity motor function in post-stroke patients. However, to draw more robust conclusions, methodological designs that minimize the risk of bias and increase the quality of the methodology of future studies are required.PMID:36047897 | DOI:10.17219/acem/152596

The experiences of spousal and adult child caregivers of stroke survivors in transitional care: A qualitative systematic review
CONCLUSION: Spousal and adult child caregivers faced multiple barriers during transitional care, such as the lack of resources and an inability to cope with changes in their lives. Support and adequate preparation were key facilitators in easing stroke caregivers into their role.IMPACT: The findings from this review can be used to guide future implementations of caregiver education programmes and comprehensive discharge planning for stroke survivors.PMID:35986588 | DOI:10.1111/jan.15420
