Estimating the public economic consequences of cardiovascular disease-attributable events and evolocumab treatment in Australia.
CONCLUSIONS: Applying a cross-sectorial government perspective budget impact assessment improves our understanding of fiscal changes attributed to ASCVD based on changes in premature mortality and work activity and how this influences lifetime tax contributions and public benefits. The main cost driver observed was associated with reduced ASCVD events that enabled people to remain productive and paying taxes. PMID: 33464137 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Changes in the prevalence of statin use in Germany - findings from national health interview and examination surveys 1997-1999 and 2008-2011.
CONCLUSION: The increase in the prevalence of statin use in Germany between the two national health surveys (1997-1999 and 2008-2011) reflects the implementation of current guideline recommendations without evidence for inequalities according to gender, education, type of health insurance or region of residence. These population-based data add to information on statin prescription obtained from statutory health insurance data. Limitations of survey-based information derive from potential misclassification and selection bias as well as large time gaps between the survey periods. Further studies are needed to examine why the...

Economic evaluation of ezetimibe treatment in combination with statin therapy in the United States.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with statin monotherapy, ezetimibe with statin therapy was cost-effective for secondary prevention of CHD and stroke and for primary prevention of these conditions in patients whose LDL-C level is ≥ 100 mg/dL and in patients with diabetes, taking into account a 90% cost reduction for ezetimibe. Using Lower Cost Statins Improves Outcomes for Normal Cholesterol Non-diabetic Patients.
CONCLUSIONS Under budget constraints, using Simvastatin instead of branded Rosuvastatin resulted in a 47 fold increase of prevention of MACE for the entire IUP. These results should be considered while initiating statin therapy in this target population. PMID: 28277855 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Discontinuation of Statins in Elderly Patients with Advanced Dementia and Limited Life Expectancy
Statins play a major role in primary and secondary prevention of stroke and coronary artery disease. In the elderly populations, there is limited evidence regarding their efficacy and benefits. Statins can increase the risk of falls; myopathy and interact with numerous medications. The elderly population is particularly vulnerable to these side effects. In patients with advanced dementia and limited life expectancy, these risks could potentially outweigh the benefits of statins.

Estimated burden of cardiovascular disease and value-based price range for evolocumab in a high-risk, secondary-prevention population in the US payer context.
CONCLUSION: Real-world CVD burden is substantial. Using the observed CVD burden in CPRD and the CTTC relationship, the cost-effectiveness analysis showed that, accounting for uncertainties, the expected value-based price for evolocumab is higher than its current annual cost as long as the payer discount off list price is greater than 20%. A cost-effectiveness analysis of over-the-counter statins.
CONCLUSIONS: With proper labeling and consumer education, it is highly likely that OTC statins would be cost-effective, as they significantly improve population health without large increases in healthcare costs. PMID: 27266585 [PubMed - in process]

Potential of risk-based population guidelines to reduce cardiovascular risk in a large integrated health system.
CONCLUSIONS: The risk calculator provided risk estimates in most patients and demonstrated fairly good discrimination and predictiveness. The risk-based decision tool identified high-risk patients for treatment not identified by traditional guidelines, as well as low-risk patients for whom treatment may be unnecessary. Assessing Uncertainties Surrounding Combined Endpoints for Use in Economic Models
Conclusions: The logistic approaches offer a flexible way to reflect one’s beliefs about the interrelationships between individual endpoints, potentially decreasing uncertainty margins. The approach works equally well with and without data concerning the underlying disease process.
