Cardiovascular risk in patients with sleep apnoea with or without continuous positive airway pressure therapy: follow‐up of 4.5 million Danish adults
ConclusionsSleep apnoea is associated with increased risk of ischaemic stroke and MI, particularly in patients younger than 50 years of age. CPAP therapy was not associated with a reduced rate of stroke or MI.

Risk of thromboembolism and fatal stroke in patients with psoriasis and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: a Danish nationwide cohort study
ConclusionsIn patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation not treated with oral anticoagulation, severe psoriasis was associated with increased risk of thromboembolism. In these patients, CHA2DS2VASc underestimated the risk of thromboembolism.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor levels are elevated and associated with complications in patients with type 1 diabetes
ConclusionThe suPAR level is higher in patients with type 1 diabetes, and is associated with diabetes duration and complications independent of other risk factors. suPAR is a potential novel risk marker for the management of diabetes. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Snus (Swedish smokeless tobacco) use and risk of stroke: Pooled Analyses of Incidence and Survival
ConclusionUse of snus was not associated with the risk of stroke. Hence, nicotine is unlikely to contribute importantly to the pathophysiology of stroke. However, case fatality was increased in snus users, compared to non‐users, but further studies are needed to determine any possible causal mechanisms. This article is protected by copyright. The collagen cross‐linking enzyme lysyl oxidase is associated with the healing of human atherosclerotic lesions
ConclusionsLOX may contribute to the healing of atherosclerotic lesions and to prevention of its lethal complications. Mediators of inflammation may control LOX expression in plaques and hence plaque stability. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Dietary exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls is associated with increased risk of stroke in women
ConclusionDietary exposure to PCBs was associated with an increased stroke risk in women, especially hemorrhagic stroke. The results provide important information regarding the risk‐benefit analysis of fish consumption, particularly for cerebrovascular disease prevention. This article is protected by copyright. The medical use of oxygen: a time for critical reappraisal
Abstract Oxygen treatment has been a cornerstone of acute medical care for numerous pathological states. Initially, this was supported by the assumed need to avoid hypoxaemia and tissue hypoxia. Most acute treatment algorithms, therefore, recommended the liberal use of a high fraction of inspired oxygen, often without first confirming the presence of a hypoxic insult. However, recent physiological research has underlined the vasoconstrictor effects of hyperoxia on normal vasculature and, consequently, the risk of significant blood flow reduction to the at‐risk tissue. Positive effects may be claimed simply by relief of a...
