Dietary exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls is associated with increased risk of stroke in women
ConclusionDietary exposure to PCBs was associated with an increased stroke risk in women, especially hemorrhagic stroke. The results provide important information regarding the risk‐benefit analysis of fish consumption, particularly for cerebrovascular disease prevention. This article is protected by copyright. Management of acute ischaemic stroke in patients with dementia
Abstract An estimated 10% of stroke patients have an underlying dementia. As a consequence, health professionals often face the challenge of managing patients with dementia presenting with an acute stroke. Patients with dementia are less likely to receive thrombolysis (0.56–10% vs. 1–16% thrombolysis rates in the general population), be admitted to a stroke unit or receive some types of care. Anticoagulation for secondary stroke prevention is sometimes withheld, despite dementia not being listed as an exclusion criterion in current guidelines. Studies in this population are scarce, and results have been contradictory. ...

Glycaemic control and excess risk of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke in patients with type 1 diabetes: a cohort study of 33 453 patients
ConclusionsIndividuals with type 1 diabetes have an increased risk of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, increasing markedly with poor glycaemic control.

A tailored treatment strategy: a modern approach for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation
The objective of this review is to provide an overview of modern AF stroke prevention with a focus on tailored treatment strategies. Biomarkers and genetic factors have been proposed to help identify ‘high‐risk’ patients to be targeted for oral anticoagulation, but ultimately their use must be balanced against that of more simple and practical considerations for everyday use. Current guidelines have directed focus on initial identification of ‘truly low‐risk’ patients with AF, that is those patients with a CHA2DS2‐VASc [congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years (two points), diabetes mellitus, ...

Snus (Swedish smokeless tobacco) use and risk of stroke: Pooled Analyses of Incidence and Survival
ConclusionUse of snus was not associated with the risk of stroke. Hence, nicotine is unlikely to contribute importantly to the pathophysiology of stroke. However, case fatality was increased in snus users, compared to non‐users, but further studies are needed to determine any possible causal mechanisms. This article is protected by copyright. Treatment of acute stroke: an update
Abstract Stroke is the second leading cause of global mortality after coronary heart disease, and a major cause of neurological disability. About 17 million strokes occur worldwide each year. Patients with stroke often require long‐term rehabilitation following the acute phase, with ongoing support from the community and nursing home care. Thus, stroke is a devastating disease and a major economic burden on society. In this overview, we discuss current strategies for specific treatment of stroke in the acute phase, focusing on intravenous thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. We will consider two important issues re...

Symptomatic carotid near‐occlusion with full collapse might cause a very high risk of stroke
ConclusionsPatients with symptomatic carotid near‐occlusion with full collapse might have a very high risk of stroke recurrence. Carotid endarterectomy could be considered for these patients. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Randomized assessment of imatinib in patients with acute ischaemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis
ConclusionThis phase II study showed that imatinib is safe and tolerable and may reduce neurological disability in patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis after ischaemic stroke. A confirmatory randomized trial is currently underway.

Integrative Studies Implicate Matrix Metalloproteinase 12 as a Culprit Gene for Large ‐Artery Atherosclerotic Stroke
ConclusionsOur study supports the notion that MMP12 is implicated in large‐artery atherosclerotic stroke, functionally by enhancing elastin degradation and macrophage invasion in plaques. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
