Interventions for acute stroke management in Africa: a systematic review of the evidence
ConclusionEvidence from this review confirms the widespread assertion of low applicability and uptake of evidence-based acute stroke care in LMICs. Despite the limited eligible studies, the overall positive patient outcomes following such interventions demonstrate the applicability and value of evidence-based acute stroke care interventions in Africa. Health policy attention is thus required to ensure widespread applicability of such interventions for improved patients ’ outcomes. The review findings also emphasises the need for further research to unravel the reasons for low uptake.Systematic review registrationPROSPEROCRD42016051566

The costs associated with stroke care continuum: a systematic review
AbstractStroke, a leading cause of death and long-term disability, has a considerable social and economic impact. It is imperative to investigate stroke-related costs. The main goal was to conduct a systematic literature review on the described costs associated with stroke carecontinuum to better understand the evolution of the economic burden and logistic challenges. This research used a systematic review method. We performed a search in PubMed/MEDLINE, ClinicalTrial.gov, Cochrane Reviews, and Google Scholar confined to publications from January 2012 to December 2021. Prices were adjusted using consumer price indices of t...

University of Cincinnati awarded $3.2 million to study stroke recurrence risk
(University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center) Researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine have been awarded $3.2 million from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases to study the use of neuroimaging to pinpoint the risk factors of stroke recurrence. Recurring stroke makes up about 25 percent of all stroke cases--nearly 800,000 annually--in the US alone. Someone who has suffered a stroke has an increased risk of a recurring stroke for up to five years after the initial event.

Embolic MCA Stroke Treated With tPA and TICI-3 Mechanical Thrombectomy Complicated by Hemiballismus: A Case Study and Literature Review
This report examines the etiology of hemiballistic movements that began 24 hours after a 63-year-old male with vascular risk factors received tissue plasminogen activator (tPa) and thrombolysis in cerebral ischemia 3 (TICI3) thrombectomy for a left middle cerebral artery (MCA) ischemic stroke. The clinical course was reviewed from an admission at a large academic institution where assessments included physical exams, head and neck computed tomography angiography (CTA), and head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) without contrast. The patient's initial physical exam was consistent with a left MCA syndrome and included a Natio...
