AbstractDue to the reactive medical approach applied to disease management, stroke has reached an epidemic scale worldwide. In 2019, the global stroke prevalence was 101.5 million people, wherefrom 77.2 million (about 76%) suffered from ischemic stroke; 20.7 and 8.4 million suffered from intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. Globally in the year 2019 — 3.3, 2.9 and 0.4 million individuals died of ischemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. Is it Bell's palsy or a stroke? Emergency physicians have the answer
(American College of Emergency Physicians) Emergency physicians correctly identified nearly 100 percent of patients with Bell's palsy, the symptoms of which are nearly identical to potentially life-threatening diseases such as stroke and brain tumors. The results of a study of six years of California patient records were published online yesterday in Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Stroke: Macrophages migrate from the blood
(University of Bonn) Macrophages are part of the innate immune system and essential for brain development and function. Using a novel method, scientists from Jena University Hospital, the University of Bonn and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (USA) succeeded in visualizing macrophages that were formed in the bone marrow. This technology enabled to observe that shortly after a stroke, numerous macrophages that had migrated from the blood begin to attack dead and adjacent healthy brain tissue.

Neuropsychiatric disorders among Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan: a retrospective cohort study 2012–2013
Conclusions: Neuropsychiatric disorders, including those traditionally considered outside the purview of refugee health, are an important burden to health among Iraqi and Syrian refugees. Possible interventions could include stroke risk factor reduction and targeted medication donations for multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and schizophrenia.

Brain tumor invasion along blood vessels may lead to new cancer treatments
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Invading glioblastoma cells may hijack cerebral blood vessels during early stages of disease progression and damage the brain's protective barrier, a study in mice indicates. This finding could ultimately lead to new ways to bring about the death of the tumor, as therapies may be able to reach these deadly cells at an earlier time point than was previously thought possible.

Men with nonapnea sleep disorders have a high risk of developing subsequent epilepsy: A nationwide population-based cohort study
Conclusion This study indicated that patients with NSDs have a higher risk of developing epilepsy and that the risk is much higher among men and older patients. These findings suggest that NSDs constitute a predisposing, possibly independent factor for developing subsequent epilepsy in adulthood.
