Impact of Birth Place and Geographic Location on Risk Disparities in Cerebrovascular Disease
The geographic disparities in stroke and cerebrovascular disease have long been recognized with high-risk areas, such as the states in the Southeast with the greatest risk and identified as the Stroke Belt. These epidemiologic observations have facilitated the identification of risk factors associated with the excess disease burden as well as the benefits of interventions focused on disease control. The geographic disparities in stroke risks prompted specific investigations and conferences to determine the factors associated with the excess risk burden for specific geographic areas, such as the southeastern United States, ...

Treatment Patterns and Outcomes of Patients Receiving Direct Oral Anticoagulants or Low Molecular Weight Heparin who Experienced Life-threatening Intracranial Hemorrhage (P5.053)
Conclusions:This study provides a real-world picture of patients receiving FXa inhibitors or LMWH, experiencing life-threatening intracranial bleeds. Despite efforts to restore hemostasis, mortality remained high and substantial healthcare resources were expended. This highlights the need to develop specific strategies for management of ICH in this patient population.Study Supported by: Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc.Disclosure: Dr. Milling has received personal compensation for activities with CSI Behring, Janssen, BI, and Portola. Dr. Feronti has received research support from Portola. Dr. Clark has received research perso...

Editorial Vascular disease and neurodegeneration: advancing together
On Feb 19, 2017, immediately before the International Stroke Conference, the MarkVCID consortium held its first meeting in Houston (TX, USA). The focus of this new research consortium is on understanding small vessel disease and its contributions to vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). For too long, research in dementia has neglected the most common comorbidity in elderly patients: cerebrovascular disease. Funders are now reversing this trend and encouraging research into the role of brain vessels in neurodegeneration, and MarkVCID is a momentous initiative in that direction.

Novel Treatments in Neuroprotection for Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Opinion statement New neuroprotective treatments aimed at preventing or minimizing “delayed brain injury” are attractive areas of investigation and hold the potential to have substantial beneficial effects on aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) survivors. The underlying mechanisms for this “delayed brain injury” are multi-factorial and not fully understood. The most ideal treatment strategies would have the potential for a pleotropic effect positively modulating multiple implicated pathophysiological mechanisms at once. My personal management (RFJ) of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage...
