Association of triglyceride-glucose index with myocardial injury post-stroke in older patients with first-ever ischemic stroke
Myocardial injury post-stroke is a common sequela of acute stroke. Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index), a valuable surrogate indicator of insulin resistance, has been suggested to be closely related to card...

Straight from the heart: Mysterious lipids may predict cardiac problems better than cholesterol
Stephanie Blendermann, 65, had good reason to worry about heart disease. Three of her sisters died in their 40s or early 50s from heart attacks, and her father needed surgery to bypass clogged arteries. She also suffered from an autoimmune disorder that results in chronic inflammation and boosts the odds of developing cardiovascular illnesses. “I have an interesting medical chart,” says Blendermann, a real estate agent in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Yet Blendermann’s routine lab results weren’t alarming. At checkups, her low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol hovered around the 100 milligrams-per-...

Unlucky numbers: Fighting murder convictions that rest on shoddy stats
LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS— When a Dutch nurse named Lucia de Berk stood trial for serial murder in 2003, statistician Richard Gill was aware of the case. But he saw no reason to stick his nose into it. De Berk was a pediatric nurse at Juliana Children’s Hospital in The Hague. In 2001, after a baby died while she was on duty, a colleague told superiors that De Berk had been present at a suspiciously high number of deaths and resuscitations. Hospital staff immediately informed the police. When investigators reexamined records from De Berk’s shifts, they found 10 suspicious incidents. Three other hospitals where D...

Aging related functional and structural changes in the heart and aorta: MitoTEMPO improves aged-cardiovascular performance.
Abstract Aging in humans represents declining in cardio-protective systems, however its mechanisms are not known yet. We aimed to analyse how aging affects key mechanisms responsible for contractile dysfunction via comparing the improperly synchrony between electrical and mechanical activities in male aged-rats (24-month old) comparison to those of adult-rats (6-month old). We determined significantly increased systemic oxidative stress with decreased antioxidant capacity, clear insulin resistance and hypertrophy in aged-rats with normal fasting blood glucose. We also determined significantly high level of reactiv...

The relation between insulin ‐like growth factor 1 levels and risk of depression in ischemic stroke
ConclusionThe data showed that low serum IGF‐1 levels at admission are associated with a high risk of developing PSD, suggesting that these alterations might be involved in the pathophysiology of depression symptoms in stroke patients.

Glycemic control and disability ‐free survival in hypoglycemic agent‐treated community‐dwelling older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
ConclusionsThese observations show that a too low HbA1c might be associated with a later risk of incident disability as a result of dementia in community‐dwelling older diabetes patients. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2017; •••: ••–••.

Role of ageing and oxidative stress in regulation of amyloid-degrading enzymes and development of neurodegeneration.
Authors: Nalivaeva NN, Turner AJ Abstract The accumulation of cerebral amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) is a key precipitating factor for neuronal cell death in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, brain Aβ levels are modifiable since there is a balance between its formation from the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and its removal by clearance mechanisms, which can be either through proteolysis or by protein binding and subsequent transport). Among the major enzymes degrading brain Aβ are several zinc-proteases: neprilysin (NEP), its homologues NEP2 and the endothelin converting enzymes (ECE-1 and -2) and also the insulin-...

Evaluation of serum lipid profile, body mass index, and waistline in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Conclusion: The present study shows for the first time that low levels of HDL-C, high levels of TG, and abnormal levels in BMI and waistline increase the risk of type 2 T2DM in Chinese people. Keywords: risk assessment, body mass index, waistline, HDL-C, TG, T2DM

Endothelin-1-Induced Focal Cerebral Ischemia in the Growth Hormone/IGF-1 Deficient Lewis Dwarf Rat
This study was designed to assess whether GH/IGF-1-deficiency influences the outcome of cerebral ischemia. We found that endothelin-1-induced middle cerebral artery occlusion resulted in a modest but nonsignificant decrease in cerebral infarct size in GH/IGF-1 deficient dw/dw rats compared with control heterozygous littermates and dw/dw rats with early-life GH treatment. Expression of endothelin receptors and endothelin-1-induced constriction of the middle cerebral arteries were similar in the three experimental groups. Interestingly, dw/dw rats exhibited reduced brain edema and less astrocytic infiltration compared with t...

Proteomic Analysis of Mature Adipocytes from Obese Patients in Relation to Aging.
In conclusion, proteomic analysis of subcutaneous adipose tissue reveals differences in the abundance of proteins in adipocytes isolated from young vs. old individuals. These differentially abundant proteins are involved in the regulation of apoptosis, cellular senescence and inflammatory response. All these are common pathologic events in both obesity and aging.
