Clinical Characteristics of Fatal Methamphetamine-related Stroke: A National Study.
Abstract The study aimed to determine the clinical characteristics of fatal methamphetamine-related stroke in Australia, 2009-2015. There were 38 cases, 60.5% male, with a mean age of 40.3 years. In no case was there evidence that this was the first time methamphetamine had been used by the decedent, and 52.6% had known histories of injecting drug use. The stroke was hemorrhagic in 37 of 38 cases. In 21.1% of cases, the stroke was purely parenchymal and, in 18.4%, involved purely the subarachnoid space. A ruptured berry aneurysm was present in 31.6% and in 68.8% of initial subarachnoid hemorrhages. There was evide...

Body mass index and fatal stroke in young adults: a national study
This study aimed to determine the body mass index (BMI) of fatal stroke cases amongst young adults, their clinical characteristics and the association with BMI with risk factors. All cases aged 15-44 years where death was attributed to stroke for whom BMI was available were retrieved from the National Coronial Information System (1/1/2009-31/12/2016). 179 cases were identified: haemorrhagic (165), ischaemic (5), thrombotic (6), mycotic (3), embolic (0). Proportions in each BMI category were: underweight (5.6%), normal weight (37.4%), overweight (27.4%), obese (29.6%). There was a significant linear trend in the proportion ...

Psychostimulant Use and Fatal Stroke in Young Adults.
Abstract Psychostimulant use is associated with increased stroke risk. To determine the proportion of psychostimulant users among fatal strokes in young adults (15-44 years), all cases were retrieved from the National Coronial Information System (1/1/2009-31/12/2016). A total of 279 cases were identified: hemorrhagic (259), ischemic (8), thrombotic (8), and mycotic (4). Fifty (17.9%) were identified as psychostimulant users. Psychostimulants in blood were detected in 37/45 where toxicology was available, predominantly methamphetamine (32/45). Hemorrhagic strokes in the psychostimulant group were more likely to be...

Dancing to death: A case of heat stroke
Publication date: Available online 4 May 2017 Source:Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine Author(s): K. Nadesan, Chandra Kumari, Mohd Afiq Heat stroke is a medical emergency which may lead to mortality unless diagnosed early and treated effectively. Heat stroke may manifest rapidly, hence making it difficult to differentiate it from other clinical causes in a collapsed victim. 1 We are presenting a case report of twelve patients who were admitted to our emergency department from a music festival held on 13–15th of March 2014. They developed complications arising from a combination of severe adverse weather condition, ...

Contribution of Antemortem Computed Tomography Findings to Cause of Death Determination: An Unusual Fatal Stroke.
Abstract In the case reported here, the antemortem computed tomography scan (CT scan) was essential in the forensic investigation. A 32-year-old man was found fully awake with a facial abrasion, after what seemed to be a car accident. He lost consciousness suddenly one hour after initial management. Successive CT scan showed a facial fracture and a metallic foreign body in the carotid canal associated with an occlusion/dissection of the left internal carotid, a pseudoaneurysm, and a carotid-cavernous fistula. The victim died from a stroke. Autopsy confirmed that the facial abrasion was a gunshot entrance wound, th...

Axonal Injury in Stroke: A Forensic Neuropathology Perspective
This study investigated staining patterns in 96 cases of stroke with no history of head injury and found complex staining patterns, some of which were indistinguishable from those said to be specific for trauma. A questioning approach to the assessment of β-APP immunostaining patterns in cases of head injury is proposed to ensure that the possibility of some or much of the staining being due to ischemia has been excluded, before concluding that the axonal injury identified is traumatic in causation.

Embolization of Endocardial Vegetation With Stroke Presentation
This case report details the unique cause of death of a 37-year-old Caucasian woman with a history significant for intravenous drug abuse. Before her death, she complained of extremity weakness and pain. Although her death was discovered to be the result of endocarditis, her symptoms were similar to that of a stroke. Autopsy revealed a large endocardial vegetation infecting both the tricuspid and mitral valves and a patent foramen ovale. The subsequent embolization of this vegetation caused blockages in the lungs, liver, and brain. An acute embolization of these vegetations to the bilateral middle cerebral arteries is the ...

Fatal heat stroke in a child entrapped in a confined space
We report the case of a child succumbing to heatstroke caused by confinement in an icebox. The post mortem examination found cyanosis and hematomas indicating that the child had tried to get out of the container. The temperature of the body was higher than it should have been considering the rigor and delay before post mortem examination. The autopsy showed no significant injury and toxicological tests were negative. A physiological study etablished that death resulted from heatstroke, not a lack of oxygen or CO2 poisoning. We conclude that heat stroke should be considered as a possible mechanism of death even in the absen...

Examination of the Sequence between Laser Printing and Rollerball Pen Writing Without an Intersecting Stroke.
Abstract Examining the sequences of printing and writing is a significant method of determining the authenticity and validity of documents. Forensic document examiners have extensively studied crossing lines, which has produced useful information. However, the sequence for laser printing and rollerball pen writing without crossing strokes has not been studied. To solve this problem, volunteers were invited to write characters on A4 paper with different rollerball pens using two sequences. Four laser printers applied print to these sheets, and the materials were examined using an Optem A-Zoom2 video tomography micr...

Evaluating infant core temperature response in a hot car using a heat balance model
Conclusions Infants left in vehicles during the workday can reach hazardous thermal thresholds quickly even with mild environmental temperatures. These results provide a seasonal analogue of infant heat stroke time course. Further effort is required to create a universally available forensic tool to predict vehicular hyperthermia time course to demise.

Dynamic Characteristics of Signatures: Effects of Writer Style on Genuine and Simulated Signatures.
Abstract The aims of this study were to determine if computer-measured dynamic features (duration, size, velocity, jerk, and pen pressure) differ between genuine and simulated signatures. Sixty subjects (3 equal groups of 3 signature styles) each provided 10 naturally written (genuine) signatures. Each of these subjects then provided 15 simulations of each of three model signatures. The genuine (N = 600) and simulated (N = 2700) signatures were collected using a digitizing tablet. MovAlyzeR(®) software was used to estimate kinematic parameters for each pen stroke. Stroke duration, velocity, and pen pressure w...

Autopsy and its role in Franco ’s dictatorship: a case of the last Republican mayor of the town Calera y Chozas (Toledo, Spain)
AbstractIn the town of Calera y Chozas (Spain), five mass graves containing the remains of 28 individuals were discovered during a 2012 excavation. The witnesses and historical evidence indicated that the body of the last Republican mayor of the town, Felipe Fern ández Varela, who had died in September 1939, was located in the mass grave designated as no. 1. Within this particular grave, only two bodies were found. Anthropological analysis showed that the first individual was significantly younger than 50 years, being the mayor’s age at the time of death , while the age of the second individual was closer to 50. This s...
