Outcome Differences between Carotid artery stenting (CAS) and Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in Postoperative Ventricular Arrhythmia, Neurological Complications and In-Hospital Mortality.
Conclusions: In short-term outcomes, CEA was associated with lower risk of postoperative ventricular arrhythmia, neurological complications, in-hospital mortality, and lower cost as compared with CAS. PMID: 32396028 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Morphology and histology of silent and symptom-causing atherosclerotic carotid plaques - Rationale and design of the Helsinki Carotid Endarterectomy Study 2 (the HeCES2).
This article provides a detailed study design and protocol of HeCES2, an observational prospective cohort study with the objective to investigate the pathophysiology of carotid atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recruitment and carotid endarterectomies of the study patients with carotid atherosclerosis were performed from October 2012 to September 2015. After brain and carotid artery imaging, endarterectomised carotid plaques (CPs) and blood samples were collected from 500 patients for detailed biochemical and molecular analyses. Findings to date: We developed a morphological grading for macroscopic characteristic...

Transient ischemic attacks.
Authors: Chaturvedi S, Hachinski V Abstract Preview All transient ischemic attacks are not created equal. However, they are a medical emergency, and all patients should be hospitalized for urgent evaluation of their risk for stroke or myocardial infarction. For optimal management, it must be determined whether an ischemic attack affects the anterior or posterior circulation. In this article, the authors review current medical options for stroke prevention and the indications for carotid endarterectomy. PMID: 29219705 [PubMed]

Update in the Management of Cerebrovascular Accidents
Publication date: Available online 24 December 2016 Source:Hospital Medicine Clinics Author(s): Andreas Varkaris, Anastasia Katsiampoura, Tim Kelliher, Chi-Cheng HuangTeaser Ischemic stroke is an acute neurologic deficit that results from focal cerebral ischemia leading to permanent tissue damage (infarction). The cause is commonly associated with atherothrombotic occlusion of large arteries; cerebral embolism (embolic infarction); nonthrombotic occlusion of small, deep cerebral arteries (lacunar infarction); and proximal arterial stenosis with hypotension that decreases cerebral blood flow in arterial watershed zones (he...

Symptomatic carotid near‐occlusion with full collapse might cause a very high risk of stroke
ConclusionsPatients with symptomatic carotid near‐occlusion with full collapse might have a very high risk of stroke recurrence. Carotid endarterectomy could be considered for these patients. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Screening for Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.
Conclusion: Current evidence does not establish incremental overall benefit of CEA, stenting, or intensification of medical therapy. Potential for overall benefit is limited by low prevalence and harms. Primary Funding Source: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. PMID: 25004169 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Screening for Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.
Abstract Description: Update of the 2007 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation on screening for carotid artery stenosis. Methods: The USPSTF commissioned a systematic review to synthesize the evidence on the accuracy of screening tests, externally validated risk stratification tools, the benefits of treatment of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis with carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAAS), the benefits from medications added to current standard medical therapy, and the harms of screening and treatment with CEA or CAAS. Population: This recommendat...

The collagen cross‐linking enzyme lysyl oxidase is associated with the healing of human atherosclerotic lesions
ConclusionsLOX may contribute to the healing of atherosclerotic lesions and to prevention of its lethal complications. Mediators of inflammation may control LOX expression in plaques and hence plaque stability. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
