Neurosurgery Morbidity and Mortality: A Prospective Surgical and Medical Analysis
CONCLUSION: The mortality and morbidity analysis provided valuable neurosurgical information that may influence future treatment management and corrective recommendations. Indication and judgment errors were significantly associated with mortality. In our study, the patients' comorbidities were not significant for mortality or increased length of stay.PMID:36941096

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 3849: Association between Anemia Severity and Ischemic Stroke Incidence: A Retrospective Cohort Study
i Chien Stroke patients presenting with anemia at the time of stroke onset had a higher risk of mortality and development of other cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities. The association between the severity of anemia and the risk of developing a stroke is still uncertain. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the association between stroke incidence and anemia severity (by WHO criteria). A total of 71,787 patients were included, of whom 16,708 (23.27%) were identified as anemic and 55,079 patients were anemia-free. Female patients (62.98%) were more likely to have anemia than males (37.02%). The likelihood of ...

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents for anaemia in adults with chronic kidney disease: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The comparative effects of different ESAs on blood transfusions, death (any cause and cardiovascular), major cardiovascular events, myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular access thrombosis, kidney failure, fatigue and breathlessness were uncertain.PMID:36791280 | PMC:PMC9924302 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD010590.pub3

Perioperative Red Blood Cell Transfusion Is Associated With Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Heart Valve Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: In the analysis of the national cohort, perioperative RBC transfusion during heart valve surgery was associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes correlated with the volume of RBC transfusion.PMID:36730895 | DOI:10.1213/ANE.0000000000006245

Esophageal Doppler-derived indices and arterial load variables provide useful hemodynamic information during assessment of fluid responsiveness in anesthetized dogs undergoing acute changes in blood volume
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Feb 1:1-11. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.22.11.0198. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between invasively measured stroke volume (SV) and (1) esophageal Doppler-derived indices such as stroke distance (StrokeD), flow time corrected (FTc), stroke distance variation (SDV), and peak velocity variation (PVV); and (2) arterial load (AL) variables during evaluation of fluid responsiveness (FR) in anesthetized dogs undergoing sudden hemodynamic shifts in blood volume.ANIMALS: 6 healthy male dogs.PROCEDURES: Dogs were anesthetized with isoflurane, ventilated mechanically, and instrume...

Isolated Tricuspid Operations: Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Isolated tricuspid repair was associated with lower adjusted mortality and morbidities than replacement. Beating heart operation was associated with lower adjusted major morbidities. Pre-operative MELD scores may identify high-risk patients, and referral to higher volume centers may help improve outcomes.PMID:36696939 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.12.041
