Minimally invasive and robotic coronary artery bypass grafting-a 25-year review
J Thorac Dis. 2021 Mar;13(3):1922-1944. doi: 10.21037/jtd-20-1535.ABSTRACTDuring the mid-1990s cardiac surgery started exploring minimally invasive methods for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and has over a 25-year period developed highly differentiated and less traumatic operations. Instead of the traditional sternotomy mini-incisions on the chest or ports are placed, surgery on the beating heart is applied, sophisticated remote access heart lung machine systems as well as videoscopic units are available, and robotic technology enables completely endoscopic approaches. This review describes these methods, reports o...

Survival outcomes and adverse events in patients with chronic kidney disease after coronary artery bypass grafting and percutaneous coronary intervention: a meta-analysis of propensity score-matching studies
CONCLUSIONS: Our propensity score matching analysis revealed that, based on long-term follow-up outcomes, CABG remains superior to PCI in patients with CKD.PMID:33781160 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2021.1903928

Sutureless aortic valves in elderly patients with aortic stenosis and intermediate-risk profile
Conclusion The use of sutureless aortic valves in elderly patients with an intermediate-risk profile provided excellent early and mid-term outcomes, providing a reliable tool in patients undergoing surgical AVR in this specific subset of population. These preliminary data need to be investigated with a TAVI control-group in further studies.

Impact of postoperative complications after cardiac surgery on long ‐term survival
ConclusionsPostoperative complications after cardiac surgery significantly impact outcomes that extend beyond the postoperative period. Stroke, renal failure, and pneumonia are particularly associated with poor long ‐term survival.

Initial Clinical Experience with Mitral Valve Translocation for Secondary Mitral Regurgitation.
CONCLUSIONS: Mitral valve translocation creates a large surface of coaptation and effectively corrects FMR. Further study is needed to demonstrate the long-term durability and clinical utility of this operation. PMID: 33440174 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Robot-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.
CONCLUSION: Although the findings from this review of comparative studies of RCAB appear promising and suggest that RCAB may offer some benefits to patients, in the absence of randomized controlled trials, these results should be interpreted cautiously. PMID: 33155975 [PubMed - in process]

Hyponatremia: an overlooked risk factor associated with adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative hyponatremia is relatively common and is associated with adverse short- and long-term outcomes after cardiac surgery. Preoperative hyponatremia can be used independently from standard risk factors to identify high risk patients for cardiac surgery. PMID: 33080237 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Low vitamin D levels affect left ventricular wall thickness in severe aortic stenosis
Conclusion Among patients with severe degenerative aortic stenosis, vitamin D deficiency is common. We found a significant association between left ventricular wall thickness and vitamin D levels, suggesting a potential role of this hormone in modulating hypertrophic remodelling in these patients. However, future larger studies are certainly needed to confirm our findings and to define their prognostic implications.
