Risk of Ischemic Stroke, Hemorrhagic Stroke, and All-Cause Mortality in Retinal Vein Occlusion: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.
Conclusions: People with RVO are at a significantly greater risk of developing stroke, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke. However, RVO does not significantly increase the risk of all-cause mortality. PMID: 30271630 [PubMed]

Association of Neovascular Glaucoma with Risk of Stroke: A Population-Based Cohort Study.
This study included 416 NVG patients and 4160 controls. Medical comorbidities were also evaluated. The cumulative incidence of ischemic stroke was 15.6% higher in the NVG cohort than in the control cohort (p < 0.001); the incidence density rates of stroke were 3.80 and 1.19 per 10,000 person-years in the NVG and control cohorts, respectively. According to the multivariable Cox regression results, the estimated adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of stroke was 2.07 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.41-3.02) for the NVG cohort. Furthermore, the NVG cohort was 2.24-fold more likely to develop ischemic stroke (95% CI = 1.51...

Prevalence of visual problems among stroke survivors in Hong Kong Chinese
ConclusionNeglecting visual problems may impose deteriorating effect on patients' stroke rehabilitation and functional independence and lead to increased incidents of injury. To address this potential hindrance in rehabilitation, formal screening for visual problems in stroke patients in a rehabilitation setting is essential.

Ocular Manifestations, Visual Field Pattern, and Visual Field Test Performance in Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke
CONCLUSION: Various ocular manifestations were found, and a considerable proportion of patients were experiencing VF defects and showed unreliable VF test performance. Our findings suggest that accurate evaluation and rehabilitation of visual function should be a matter of greater concern and emphasis in the management of TBI and stroke patients, besides systemic diseases.PMID:35036002 | PMC:PMC8759901 | DOI:10.1155/2022/1703806

Static and dynamic retinal vessel analyses in patients with stroke as compared to healthy control subjects
ConclusionsOur pilot study indicates that retinal analysis is a non‐invasive and convenient tool that is relevant to study microvascular changes in stroke patients The importance of retinal changes as a risk factor for stroke or for patient stratification is now being addressed in follow‐up studies.

Secondary Stroke Prevention and Management for the Neuro-Ophthalmologist
Conclusions: The optimal treatment to prevent stroke recurrence is determined by the etiology of stroke. After stroke workup, patients will typically be placed on proper medical therapy for the appropriate duration in addition to counseling on lifestyle modifications to reduce the risk of recurrent strokes. For complex patients, it is reasonable for providers to consider patient referral to stroke specialists for further aid in selection of appropriate medical therapy.

Increased stroke risk among patients with open-angle glaucoma: a 10-year follow-up cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients who were diagnosed with OAG were more likely to experience subsequent stroke than comparison group without OAG, and the risk was greater for older adults and males. PMID: 28729368 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

New Standards of Care in Ischemic Stroke
Conclusions: Endovascular therapy is now standard of care for eligible patients with anterior large vessel occlusions. Prolonged cardiac monitoring is recommended for patients with cryptogenic stroke. The novel anticoagulants are an alternative to warfarin in patients with AF.

Updates in the Management of Cryptogenic Stroke and Patent Foramen Ovale
Conclusions: Stroke management is based on evaluation of individual patient-risk factors. Evaluation and treatment is ideally directed by a vascular neurologist to ensure optimal secondary prevention, especially in cases where an underlying etiology is not identified on initial workup.
