Clopidogrel use and smoking cessation result in lower coated-platelet levels after stroke.
Authors: Kirkpatrick AC, Vincent AS, Dale GL, Prodan CI Abstract Coated-platelets are a subset of highly procoagulant platelets elevated in patients with non-lacunar ischemic stroke and associated with stroke recurrence. Cross-sectional studies in controls have shown that smoking is associated with higher coated-platelet levels while chronic use of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), statins or aspirin is associated with lower coated-platelet levels. We now investigate if initiation of treatment with SSRIs, statins, clopidogrel, aspirin or oral anticoagulants and smoking cessation impacts coated-platelet levels ...

Antithrombotic actions of statins involve PECAM-1 signaling
Statins are widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drugs that are a first-line treatment of coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis, reducing the incidence of thrombotic events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Statins have been shown to reduce platelet activation, although the mechanism(s) through which this occurs is unclear. Because several of the characteristic effects of statins on platelets are shared with those elicited by the inhibitory platelet adhesion receptor PECAM-1 (platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1), we investigated a potential connection between the influence of statins on platelet f...

Hemopericardium under dabigatran for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation
We report a polymorbid 75-year old male under a therapy with dabigatran, valsartan, amlodipine, nicorandil, furosemide, atorvastatin, bisoprolol, metformin, tizanidine, pantoprazole, and tramadol. He suffered from chest pain for 4 months. Coronary angiography showed only ectatic coronary arteries. He started taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. He was hospitalized because of dyspnea starting 10 days before admission, melena, and renal failure. Hemopericardium was diagnosed and pericardiocentesis yielded 2000 ml hemorrhagic fluid. Review of previous echocardiograms showed a 4 mm echo-free space, epicardial fat o...

Pitavastatin Compared with Differential Intervention Trial by Standard Therapy on Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Dyslipidemia on Chronic Hemodialysis (DIALYSIS): A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusion: Our study has demonstrated that aggressive intervention with pitavastatin is more effective than the standard (dietary) therapy for improving the clinical outcomes in patients with dyslipidemia on chronic hemodialysis.Blood Purif
