The potential impact of new stent platforms for coronary revascularization in diabetics
Publication date: Available online 1 March 2018 Source:Canadian Journal of Cardiology Author(s): Gustavo S. Guandalini, Sripal Bangalore Coronary artery disease in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by extensive atherosclerosis, longer lesions and diffuse distal disease. Consequently, these patients have worse outcomes following coronary revascularization, regardless of the modality employed. Traditionally, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been regarded as more effective than percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with DM, owing likely to more complete revascularization and prote...

Contego Medical launches Neuroguard IEP trial
Contego Medical said today it launched the Performance I trial of its Neuroguard IEP 3-in-1 carotid stent and post-dilation balloon system with integrated embolic protection designed to treat carotid artery stenosis. The first patient in the trial has already been enrolled and treated at Skopje, Macedonia’s University Clinic of Cardiology by Dr. Saško Kedev, the Raleigh, N.C.-based company said. “We are pleased to initiate this trial evaluating the Neuroguard IEP System, the first of its kind for carotid stenting. Protection from stroke is key during carotid artery interventions. This 3-in-1 system includes a ...

Long-Term Outcome of Balloon Angioplasty Without Stenting for Symptomatic Middle Cerebral Artery Stenosis
A recent randomized controlled trial demonstrated that aggressive medical management was superior to angioplasty with stenting for intracranial stenosis. The purpose of this study was to assess initial and long-term outcomes of balloon angioplasty without stenting for symptomatic middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenosis.

Treatment of femoro-popliteal lesions with scoring and drug-coated balloon angioplasty: 12-month results of the DCB-Trak registry.
CONCLUSION: Vessel preparation with a scoring-balloon and subsequent DCB-angioplasty was safe and effective in patients with femoro-popliteal lesions. Further multicenter trials have to validate these results. PMID: 29770768 [PubMed - in process]

Intra-arterial Papaverine-Hydrochloride and Transluminal Balloon Angioplasty for the Neurointerventional Management of Delayed Onset Post Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Vasospasm
After subarachnoid hemorrhage delayed onset vasospasm can result in devastating ischemic stroke. The phenomenon of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) is yet not fully understood and the correlation of angiographic vasospasm and cerebral infarction is still unclear. Therefore, this study is set out to investigate the impact of endovascular treatment on angiographic response and occurrence of DCI.

Recanalization of Tandem Vertebrobasilar Occlusions with Contralateral Vertebral Occlusion or Hypoplasia via either Direct Passage or the SHERPA Technique
Conclusion: Recanalization of tandem vertebrobasilar occlusions with contralateral occlusion or hypoplasia is feasible. Intracranial recanalization is facilitated by the passage of a long 6F sheath into V2, and retrograde delineation of an occluded vertebral origin with a microwire may serve as a crucial adjunct.Intervent Neurol 2019;8:13 –19

Treatment of Simultaneous Thromboembolism of the Right and Left Coronary Arteries with Thrombus Aspiration in a Patient with a Prosthetic Mitral Valve.
Authors: Sığırcı S, Keskin K, Sezai Yıldız S, Aksan G, Bambul Sığırcı B, Orta Kılıçkesmez K Abstract Prosthetic heart valve thrombosis is a rare, difficult-to-treat condition that increases morbidity and mortality by leading to systemic embolism. Clinically, it presents mainly in the form of stroke, though an embolism be observed in many systems. Acute coronary syndrome, which is rarely observed in patients with a prosthetic heart valve, mostly occurs as non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI). There is no specific recommendation for the treatment of this condition. Revascularization succes...

Trends in the Incidence and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases in Korea : Part II. Cerebral Infarction, Cerebral Arterial Stenosis, and Moyamoya Disease.
Conclusion: Although the incidence of CI showed a declining trend over a 9-year period, the number and proportion of patients treated for CI increased. Meanwhile, the incidence of CASTN and the number of patients treated for CASTN have demonstrated increasing trends since 2008. On the other hand, the number of patients diagnosed with pediatric MMD decreased, despite no significant change in the incidence. In contrast, the number of patients and the incidence of adult MMD increased. These trends reflect changes in the population structure, gains in the accessibility of imaging examinations, and the development of endovascul...

Use of stent retriever for treatment of iatrogenic intracranial vasospasm.
We present a case report of a patient who underwent a mechanical thrombectomy for stroke and suffered from vasospasm. This severe flow-limiting vasospasm was successfully treated with the Trevo stent device. Although stent retrievers have become more widespread for thrombectomy, vasospasm treatment has not been often described in the literature. Further study is needed to determine if this is a viable technique for treating resistant vasospasm. PMID: 31088245 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
