von Willebrand factor, ADAMTS-13, and thrombospondin 1 in relation to clinical outcomes in elderly patients with a recent myocardial infarction
CONCLUSION: Although low ADAMTS-13 predicted death, the cardiovascular risk associated with VWF and ADAMTS-13 was weaker than previously reported. Low VWF is associated with new-onset AF and needs further research.PMID:37255854 | PMC:PMC10225923 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100164

Platelet versus plasma CXCL14, coronary artery disease, and clinical outcomes
CONCLUSION: Platelet-associated and circulating CXCL14 levels show differential regulation in patients with and without CAD. Although platelet-associated CXCL14 increased and circulating CXCL14 decreased with impairment of LVEF, only lower circulating CXCL14 upon admission was associated with worse prognosis in patients with CAD.PMID:37255851 | PMC:PMC10225916 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2023.100165

Immature platelets and cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary artery disease
Platelets. 2023 Dec;34(1):2217960. doi: 10.1080/09537104.2023.2217960.ABSTRACTMany patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) have reduced the effect of aspirin, which may partly be explained by immature platelets. We aimed to investigate whether immature platelet markers can predict cardiovascular events in a large cohort of stable CAD patients. A total of 900 stable CAD patients were included and followed for a median of 3 years. We measured markers of immature platelets (platelet count, immature platelet count, immature platelet fraction, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, platelet mass, and thrombopoie...

Mobile Health-Technology-Integrated Care for Atrial Fibrillation: A Win Ratio Analysis from the mAFA-II Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS: In this posthoc WR analysis of the mAFA-II trial, a mHealth-technology-implemented integrated care approach was effective in reducing the risk of the primary composite outcome of all-cause death, ischemic stroke or thromboembolism, and rehospitalization, even when prioritizing fatal events.PMID:37247623 | DOI:10.1055/s-0043-1769612

Effect of obstructive sleep apnea on prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndromes with varying numbers of standard modifiable risk factors: insight from the OSA-ACS study
ConclusionsIn hospitalized ACS patients, OSA is associated with an increased risk of MACCE and ischemia-driven revascularization among patients with 3 –4 SMuRFs. Therefore, screening for OSA should be emphasized in ACS patients with 3–4 SMuRFs, and intervention trials should be prioritized in these high-risk patients.

Clonal Hematopoiesis in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Confers a Predisposition to both Thrombosis and Cancer
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review focuses on vascular complications associated with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) and more specifically aims to discuss the clinical and biological evidence supporting the existence of a link between clonal hematopoiesis, cardiovascular events (CVE), and solid cancer (SC).Recent FindingsThe MPN natural history is driven by uncontrolled clonal myeloproliferation sustained by acquired somatic mutations in driver (JAK2, CALR, and MPL) and non-driver genes, involving epigenetic (e.g., TET2, DNMT3A) regulators, chromatin regulator genes (e.g., ASXL1, EZH2), and splicing machinery ...

Real-world clinical outcomes among US Veterans with oral factor xa inhibitor –related major bleeding treated with andexanet alfa or 4-factor prothrombin complex concentrate
AbstractOral factor Xa (FXa) inhibitors significantly reduce incidence of stroke and thromboembolic events in patients with atrial fibrillation or venous thromboembolism. Due to various factors and the lack of a randomized controlled trial comparing andexanet alfa to usual care, non-specific replacement agents including 4  F-PCC are still used off-label for FXa inhibitor bleed management. Clinical and mortality data were extracted from the inpatient medical data and Veteran Affairs (VA) vital status files over the time of March 2014 through December 2020. Propensity score-weighted models were used for this retrospec tive ...

Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism in Medical Patients with Thrombocytopenia or with Platelet Dysfunction: The Last 10 Years
Semin Thromb Hemost DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1769013Current guideline recommendations for primary prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are based on randomized clinical trials that usually exclude subjects at a potentially high risk of bleeding complications. For this reason, no specific guideline is available for thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized patients with thrombocytopenia and/or platelet dysfunction. However, except in patients with absolute contraindications to anticoagulant drugs, antithrombotic prophylaxis should always be considered, for example, in hospitalized cancer patients with thrombocytopenia, especially...

The Role of CD36/GPIV in Platelet Biology
Semin Thromb Hemost DOI: 10.1055/s-0043-1768935CD36 (also known as platelet glycoprotein IV) is expressed by a variety of different cell entities, where it possesses functions as a signaling receptor, but additionally acts as a transporter for long-chain fatty acids. This dual function of CD36 has been investigated for its relevance in immune and nonimmune cells. Although CD36 was first identified on platelets, the understanding of the role of CD36 in platelet biology remained scarce for decades. In the past few years, several discoveries have shed a new light on the CD36 signaling activity in platelets. Notably, CD36 has ...
