The diagnostic and prognostic value of copeptin in patients with acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The above systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that monitoring the copeptin levels may help predict the long-term prognosis of ischemic stroke efficiently. Determining the copeptin level may help individualize the management of ischemic stroke patients, keep stroke risk lower, reduce post-stroke complications, including patient death, and minimize healthcare costs.PMID:35621091 | DOI:10.5603/CJ.a2022.0045

Screening for silent aspiration in hyperacute stroke: A feasibility study of clinical swallowing examination and cough reflex testing
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: CRT, CSE and FEES are feasible in 58% of hyperacute stroke patients in this setting. FEES anxiety is the main recruitment barrier and is not always well tolerated. Results support further work to establish optimum methods and differential sensitivity/specificity of CRT and CSE in hyperacute stroke for SA identification.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject SA significantly increases the risk of pneumonia in the early days post-stroke. CSEs are unreliable for identification of SA risk in this population. CRT is gaining popularity as a potential tool to identify stroke patien...

Impact of Atrial Fibrillation on Stroke-Related Healthcare Costs Hypertension
Conclusion Stroke-related care for IS, HS, and TIA is costly, especially among individuals with AF. Reducing the risk of AF-related stroke is important from both clinical and economic standpoints.

Is the Use of r-tPA in Mild Stroke Patients Cost-Effective? (P3.104)
CONCLUSIONS: Economic analyses based on preliminary clinical data suggest that r-tPA could be cost saving or highly cost-effective in the treatment of mild patients. Controlled clinical trials will be valuable in definitively establishing the clinical and economic value of r-tPA in mild stroke.Study Supported by: Genentech Inc.Disclosure: Dr. Guzauskas has received personal compensation for activities with Genentech, Inc. Healthcare costs of stroke and major bleeding in patients with atrial fibrillation treated with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants.
CONCLUSIONS: The incremental healthcare costs incurred by patients with versus without stroke/SE was nearly twice as high as those of patients with versus without MB. Moreover, each additional year up to 4 years after the first event was associated with an incremental cost for patients with a stroke/SE or MB event compared to those without an event. Blood pressure control and risk profile in poststroke survivors: a comparison with the general population
Conclusion: We found a high prevalence and poor control of major cardiovascular risk factors in patients surviving their first-ever ischemic stroke, thus showing poor implementation of guidelines for secondary prevention in clinical practice.

Economic impact of patients admitted to stroke units in Spain
Conclusions The cost of patients admitted to stroke units in Spain is €27,711 per patient/year. More than two-thirds are social costs, mainly informal care. Stroke remains a major burden on health systems and society, so additional efforts are needed for its prevention.

Caregiver-mediated exercises for improving outcomes after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: There is very low- to moderate-quality evidence that CME may be a valuable intervention to augment the pallet of therapeutic options for stroke rehabilitation. Included studies were small, heterogeneous, and some trials had an unclear or high risk of bias. Future high-quality research should determine whether CME interventions are (cost-)effective. The impact of ischaemic stroke on atrial fibrillation-related healthcare cost: a systematic review
AbstractThe aim of this study was to summarize healthcare costs incurred by patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who developed ischaemic stroke, explore factors associated with increased cost, and highlight the importance of anticoagulation therapy for stroke prophylaxis. A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the health economic evaluation database was conducted up to December 2015. Studies focused on the cost and/or resource utilization of ischaemic stroke in patients with AF were included. Reported costs were converted to international dollars (I$) and adjusted to 2015 values. Alongside ...

The incidence of stroke in patients with early echocardiography after acute myocardial infarction
AbstractLeft ventricular (LV) thrombus formation after ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) increases the risk of stroke. In our center, most echocardiograms are performed within 2  days post-STEMI. However, LV thrombi often become visible later. We assessed the 1-year incidence of stroke in patients without LV thrombus on echocardiography performed early (1–2 days) vs. later (day ≥ 3) post-STEMI. This retrospective observational study included 416 patients with acut e STEMI. Patients with atrial fibrillation were excluded. All patients underwent echocardiography during admission. Patients with stroke withi...
