The multiple validities of neuropsychological assessment.
This article discusses construct and criterion validity of neuropsychological tests, as well as assessment validity, which allows determination of whether an individual examinee is producing valid test results. Factor analyses identify 6 domains of abilities. Tests of learning and memory and processing speed are most sensitive to presence of brain dysfunction in both traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Tests of processing speed, working memory, verbal symbolic functions, and visuoperceptual and visuospatial judgment and problem solving are sensitive to the severity of TBI and AD, as well as to the ...

Use of the parallel beam task for skilled walking in a rat model of cerebral ischemia: A qualitative approach
Publication date: Available online 3 January 2017 Source:Learning and Motivation Author(s): Brian Ficiur, Jamshid Faraji, Gerlinde A.S. Metz The parallel beam task (PBT), in which animals walk across two elevated parallel beams, is commonly used to assess motor deficits in laboratory rodents. Performance of the PBT challenges postural balance, inter-limb coordination and skilled walking abilities, and is typically assessed by quantitative measures such as number of foot slips and/or successful traversals. We proposed that including qualitative movement analysis of skilled walking would increase resolution and sensitivity ...

The Chinese Australian Neuropsychological Normative Study: Neuropsychological Test Norms for Chinese Australians Aged 55 –90 Years
ConclusionThe influence of demographic variables and reliability coefficients of neuropsychological tests developed for dominant western cultural groups cannot be assumed to be the same across CALD groups. Use of CALD‐specific norms is recommended to increase the reliability and validity of neuropsychological testing.

Learning to write: The role of handwriting for Chinese spelling in kindergarten children.
Given the orthographic complexities of Chinese characters, handwriting skills may play an important role in how children learn to write Chinese. The present study includes a comprehensive battery of handwriting measures in relation to Chinese spelling in young children. Measures of handwriting, including stroke order, visual-motor integration (Hebrew and Vietnamese copying) and handwriting fluency, along with other reading-related cognitive skills, were administered to 141 kindergartners in Hong Kong schools. We assessed the extent to which these handwriting measures are associated with spelling. A series of regression ana...

The relationship of cognitive change over time to the self-reported Ascertain Dementia 8-item Questionnaire in a general population.
CONCLUSIONS: Incident cognitive impairment and high depression risk were the strongest predictors of self-reported positive AD8 in this population-based sample. Our results inform the utility of the AD8 as a self-report measure in a large, national sample that avoids selection biases inherent in clinic-based studies. The AD8 is screening measure and should not be used to diagnose dementia clinically. PMID: 32613226 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dl-3-n-Butylphthalide Protects against Memory Deficits in Vascular Dementia Rats by Attenuating Pyroptosis via TLR-4/NF- κB Signaling Pathway
Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that NBP protects against memory deficits in permanent bilateral common carotid artery occlusion-induced VD rats by attenuating pyroptosis via the TLR-4/NF- κB signaling pathway.Neuropsychobiology
