Conclusions— AF-stroke is associated with considerable long-term morbidity, fatality, stroke recurrence, and nursing home requirement. Adequately resourced national AF strategies to improve AF detection and prevention are needed.

Patients With Ischemic Stroke and Incident Atrial Fibrillation: A Nationwide Cohort Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Ischemic stroke was associated with a substantially increased risk of incident AF, particularly among individuals with higher CHADS2 or CHA2DS2-VASc scores. These risk scores seem to be simple tools for identifying patients at higher risk of incident AF after ischemic stroke.

Cost-Effectiveness of Oral Anticoagulants for Ischemic Stroke Prophylaxis Among Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation Patients Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— All the newer oral anticoagulants compared were more effective than adjusted dosed warfarin. Our model showed that apixaban was the most effective anticoagulant in a general atrial fibrillation population and has an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio <$50 000/QALY. For those with higher stroke risk (CHADS2≥3), dabigatran was the most cost-effective treatment option.

Leukoaraiosis and stroke recurrence risk in patients with and without atrial fibrillation
Conclusions: Leukoaraiosis is an independent predictor of stroke recurrence in non-AF stroke patients. However, leukoaraiosis did not increase the accuracy of the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores to predict stroke recurrence in AF or non-AF stroke patients.

Importance of Considering Competing Risks in Time-to-Event Analyses: Application to Stroke Risk in a Retrospective Cohort Study of Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Original Articles
Conclusions: The incidence of death without stroke was 9-fold higher than that of stroke, leading to biased estimates of stroke risk with traditional time-to-event methods. Statistical methods that appropriately account for competing risks should be used to mitigate this bias.

Incidence and Cost of Stroke and Hemorrhage in Patients Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation in France
Conclusions: The incidence and cost of hospitalization for hemorrhage should be considered in the global burden of AF. These data should be useful for pharmacoeconomic evaluation of new oral anticoagulant medications. Such real-world studies may be relevant for monitoring mid- to long-term morbidity and mortality in the AF population.

Conclusions— In patients with aortic stenosis not prescribed oral anticoagulation, atrial fibrillation, AVR with concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting, and CHA2DS2-VASc score were the major predictors of stroke. Conclusions: This meta-analysis provides strong evidence that endovascular intervention combined with medical management, including IV tissue plasminogen activator for eligible patients, improves the outcomes of appropriately selected patients with acute ischemic stroke in the setting of LVO.

Association of Hemoglobin A1c and Baseline Ischemic Stroke Severity: A Population-Based Study (P1.187)
Conclusions: We found that elevated HbA1c was associated with decreased stroke severity at presentation. However, this effect is mediated by the history of DM rather than a specific dose-effect of glycemic control. Increased risk of stroke in patients with chronic kidney disease after recurrent hypoglycemia
Conclusions: CKD was associated with a higher risk of stroke and mortality in patients with hypoglycemia. Recurrent hypoglycemia considerably increased the risk of stroke and overall mortality in patients with CKD regardless of whether they had diabetes. These results suggest that hypoglycemia has a crucial role in stroke and death in patients with CKD.

Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressure Changes in Relation With Myocardial Infarction and Stroke in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease Clinical Trials
In conclusion, in patients with coronary artery disease and initially free from congestive heart failure, a BP reduction from baseline over the examined BP range had little effect on the risk of MI and predicted a lower risk of stroke. An increase in systolic BP from baseline increased the risk of stroke and MI. The relationships of BP with risk were much steeper for stroke than for MI. A treatment-induced BP reduction over the explored range seems to be safe in patients with coronary artery disease. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Rates of Ischemic Stroke During Warfarin Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation Brief Reports
Conclusions— In a large cohort of older patients with atrial fibrillation, we observed the highest rate of ischemic stroke in the first 30 days after warfarin initiation. Although causation cannot be established given the observational nature of this study, our findings highlight the need for future research in this population.
