Cerebrovascular Accidents During Mechanical Circulatory Support Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients on LVAD support. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease increases the risk of ischemic stroke, whereas dialysis may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Although any stroke increases mortality, post-LVAD hemorrhagic stroke was associated with higher mortality compared with ischemic stroke.

Urine toxicology screening in an urban stroke and TIA population
Conclusions: In this study, patients with stroke and TIA who were young and black were more likely to have urine toxicology screening. Eleven percent of all tested patients (and 9% of patients 50 years or older) were positive for cocaine. To avoid disparities, we suggest that all stroke and TIA patients be tested.

A comparative analysis of risk factors and stroke risk for Asian and non‐Asian men: The Asia Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration
ConclusionsMen from the Asia‐Pacific region share common risk factors for stroke. Strategies aimed at lowering population levels of systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, body mass index, smoking, and diabetes are likely to be beneficial in reducing stroke risk, particularly for ischemic stroke, across the region.

Trends in 10-Year Survival of Patients With Stroke Hospitalized Between 1980 and 2000: The Minnesota Stroke Survey Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— These poststroke survival trends are likely because of multiple factors, including more sensitive case ascertainment shifting the case mix toward less severe strokes, improved stroke care and risk factor management, and overall improvements in population health and longevity.

Aspirin for secondary prevention after stroke of unknown etiology in resource-limited settings
Conclusions: The concern that the risks of aspirin in patients with stroke of unknown etiology could outweigh the benefits is not supported by our model, which predicts that aspirin for secondary prevention in patients with stroke of undetermined etiology in resource-limited settings could lead to decreased stroke-related mortality and stroke recurrence.

Stroke in Asia: geographical variations and temporal trends
Asian countries are in various stages of epidemiological transition and therefore exhibit a great diversity in disease patterns. Collectively, they comprise almost two-third of the world's total mortality due to stroke. The purpose of this review is to explore existing epidemiological data on stroke, highlight the temporal trends in stroke epidemiology in various regions of Asia and predict future patterns based on these observations. Our search revealed that there is a lack of good epidemiological data from most Asian countries. Whatever data exist are not comparable due to lack of standardised methodology for ascertainin...

Deaths from stroke in US young adults, 1989-2009
Conclusions: Although hospitalizations for stroke in young patients have been increasing, the apparent decrease in mortality rates and in racial disparities suggests that recognition and treatment in this group may be improving.

Risk of stroke in retinal vein occlusion
Conclusions: The present study provides new evidence that patients with incident RVO are at increased risk of stroke just after RVO occurrence. Immediate risk evaluation and proper treatment of stroke risk factors in patients with RVO are needed to reduce stroke-related mortality and morbidity.

Marital Transition and Risk of Stroke: How Living Arrangement and Employment Status Modify Associations Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Living arrangement and employment status modified the positive associations between marital transition and stroke risk, which differed by sex.

Treatment Effect of Clopidogrel Plus Aspirin Within 12 Hours of Acute Minor Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack Stroke
Conclusions Among patients treated within 12 hours, the combination of clopidogrel and aspirin was more effective than aspirin alone in reducing the risk of recurrent ischemic stroke during the 90-day follow-up and did not increase the hemorrhagic risk. Impact of Hemoglobin Levels and Anemia on Mortality in Acute Stroke: Analysis of UK Regional Registry Data, Systematic Review, and Meta-Analysis Stroke
Conclusions Strong evidence suggests that patients with anemia have increased mortality with stroke. Targeted interventions in this patient population may improve outcomes and require further evaluation.

Adiposity and ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke: Prospective study in women and meta-analysis
Conclusions: In UK women, higher BMI is associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke but decreased risk of hemorrhagic stroke. The totality of the available published evidence suggests that BMI-associated risks are greater for ischemic than for hemorrhagic stroke.

Ambient Particulate Matter Concentrations and Hospitalization for Stroke in 26 Chinese Cities Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study suggests that short-term elevations in PM may increase the risk of ischemic but not hemorrhagic stroke. The associations of PM with ischemic stroke are stronger in northern China than in the south.

Patterns of Emergency Medical Services Use and Its Association With Timely Stroke Treatment: Findings From Get With the Guidelines-Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Although EMS use is independently associated with more rapid evaluation and treatment of stroke, more than one third of stroke patients fail to use EMSs. Interventions aimed at increasing EMS activation should target populations at risk, particularly younger patients and those of minority race and ethnicity.
