Exercise after Stroke: Patient Adherence and Beliefs after Discharge from Rehabilitation.
CONCLUSION: Patient adherence with HEP after discharge from rehabilitation is less than ideal. Reasons for non-adherence are varied. Rehabilitation therapists need to be able to identify and help patients manage barriers to HEP adherence to promote management of residual deficits. PMID: 27334684 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Fidelity to a motivational interviewing intervention for those with post-stroke aphasia: a small-scale feasibility study.
This study aimed to explore the feasibility of motivational interviewing (MI) in people with post-stroke aphasia. METHODS: In a small-scale feasibility study, consecutive patients admitted to an acute stroke ward were screened for eligibility. People with moderate to severe aphasia were eligible. Those consenting received an intervention consisting of up to eight MI sessions delivered twice per week over four weeks. Sessions were modified using aids and adaptations for aphasia. Session quality was measured using the Motivational Interviewing Skills Code (MISC) to assess MI fidelity. RESULTS: Three consenting pati...

Neurobehavioral disability in stroke patients during subacute inpatient rehabilitation: prevalence and biopsychosocial associations.
CONCLUSIONS: NBD is common within a subacute stroke inpatient population, particularly interpersonal and cognitive difficulties and preliminary analyses indicate associations with reduced functional ability, cognition and mood. There is a need to provide education and support to clinicians to facilitate routine assessment and management of NBD following stroke. PMID: 30213238 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Depressive symptoms in caregivers immediately after stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Caregiver and stroke-survivor characteristics may help identify caregivers at highest risk for early depressive symptoms and guide interventions aimed at their resolution. PMID: 30929619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Translation and validation of the stroke self-efficacy questionnaire to a Portuguese version in stroke survivors.
Conclusion: SSEQ-B is a valid, reliable, and stable patient-reported outcome. It has concurrent validity with self-reported measures of depression, functional independence and a multi-dimensional measure of health status in chronic stroke survivors in Brazil. Depression and Risk of Stroke in Midaged Women: A Prospective Longitudinal Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Depression is a strong risk factor for stroke in midaged women, with the association partially explained by lifestyle and physiological factors. Further studies of midaged and older women from the same population are needed to confirm whether depression is particularly important in younger women and to inform targeted intervention approaches.

Prospective Study of Anxiety and Incident Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Higher anxiety symptom levels were associated prospectively with increased risk for incident stroke independent of other risk factors, including depression. Anxiety is a modifiable experience that is highly prevalent among the general population. Its assessment and treatment may contribute to developing more effective preventive and intervention strategies for improving overall cardiovascular health.

What Makes Family Caregivers Happy During the First 2 Years Post Stroke? Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Our findings contribute to the caregiver intervention development literature by identifying aspects of the caregiving situation that are associated with positive outcomes. Incorporating specific aspects, for example, strategies to enhance caregiver mastery into programs and services offered to caregivers may enhance their positive experiences with providing care and ultimately enhance the sustainability of the caregiving situation.

Frontal lobe atrophy in depression after stroke.
Conclusions. The results suggest that FLA may play a role in the pathogenesis of DAS, which supports the hypothesis that cumulative vascular burden may be important in predicting DAS. Further investigations are needed to clarify the impact of FLA on the clinical presentation, treatment response, and outcome of DAS in stroke survivors. PMID: 23533960 [PubMed]

Reliability and validity of the Swedish Fatigue Assessment Scale when self-administrered by persons with mild to moderate stroke.
CONCLUSION: The Swedish translation of the FAS used as a self-administrated questionnaire is reliable and valid for measuring fatigue in persons with mild to moderate stroke. PMID: 26883993 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Imaging and Baseline Predictors of Cognitive Performance in Minor Ischemic Stroke and Patients With Transient Ischemic Attack at 90 Days Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Despite average-range cognitive performance in this TIA and population with minor stroke, we found associations of EF and PS with evidence of previous stroke, postevent disability, and depression.

Home-based telesurveillance and rehabilitation after stroke: a real-life study.
CONCLUSION: The home-based program was feasible and effective in both sub-acute and chronic post-stroke patients, improving their recovery, and maintaining the benefits reached during inpatient rehabilitation. PMID: 27078116 [PubMed - in process]

Informal caregivers' burden and stress in caring for stroke survivors with spatial neglect: an exploratory mixed-method study.
CONCLUSIONS: This exploratory study suggests that spatial neglect may heighten caregivers' burden and stress levels. Future studies with a large sample size are required. PMID: 27216085 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Delirium post-stroke: short- to long-term effect on anxiety and depression compared to effect on cognition.
Conclusion Delirium may not have a significant effect on the development of anxiety or depression after stroke which differs in its effect on cognitive function and functional status. PMID: 28938851 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The relationship between BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and functional mobility in chronic stroke survivors.
Conclusions Our results suggest that the Val66Met polymorphism does not predict long-term, functional mobility following stroke. This difference may be due to differences in model variables or a reduced impact of the polymorphism as recovery progresses. PMID: 29480080 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
