Academic-industry Collaborations in Translational Stroke Research
Abstract Academic-industry collaborations are an emerging format of translational stroke research. Next to classic contract research models, a multitude of collaboration models has been developed, some of which even allowing for multinational or intercontinental research programs. This development has recently been paralleled by first successful attempts to overcome the translational stroke research road block, such as the unprecedented success of novel endovascular approaches or the advent of the multicenter preclinical trial concept. While the first underlines the role of the industry as a major innovation drive...

Reliability of the Acutely Estimated Premorbid Modified Rankin Scale for Stroke Treatment Decision Making
Background: Premorbid functional status is an important factor in acute stroke treatment decision making. Determining the modified Rankin Score (mRS) accurately may be difficult due to deficits from stroke and lack of collateral information in the acute setting. Data on the reliability of the premorbid mRS in “real-world” practice outside of clinical trial or registry settings are limited. Methods: A retrospective study at a high volume academic primary stroke center. For patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with alteplase between July 2012 and July 2016, hospital electronic records were revie wed for detailed i...

Establishing the need for a stroke unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in South Africa
Stroke in Africa is a growing and neglected crisis with strokes more than doubling in low to middle income countries in the last four decades. Despite this growing threat to healthcare systems, implementation of stroke models of care in hospitals is lacking with most stroke patients being managed as part of a general medical service. Stroke units have shown to decrease mortality, reduce length of stay in hospital (LOS), and improve patient outcomes.

Elevated thyroid autoantibodies and intracranial stenosis in stroke at an early age
ConclusionsThyroid autoantibodies may be associated with the presence of intracranial large artery stenosis in young stroke patients, potentially providing insight on immune pathogenesis of intracranial large artery stenosis.

Rapidly improving neurological deficit of stroke; case series in Academic institute, KAUH, Jeddah (P4.283)
Conclusions:Rapidly improving patient represent a challenge to whether tPA should be given. However, the good outcome with thrombolytic therapy observed in our study, will hopfuly support the decision to treat.Study Supported by: nonDisclosure: Dr. khoja has nothing to disclose. Apolipoproteins B and A1 in Ischemic Stroke Subtypes
Introduction: Elevated serum apolipoprotein B and the apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio have been associated with ischemic stroke and intracranial atherosclerotic disease. We sought to assess the relationship between serum levels of apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein A1, and the apolipoprotein B/A1 ratio with ischemic stroke subtypes and large artery atherosclerosis location. Materials and Methods: We evaluated serum apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein A1 levels in consecutive, statin-na ïve, adult ischemic stroke patients admitted to an academic medical center in southern India.

One-year data from global atrial fibrillation (AF) registry show antithrombotic agents not optimally used to prevent stroke
One-year outcomes data from the first cohort of the Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD (GARFIELD), an innovative, independent academic research initiative, provide insights into the elevated stroke risk among subpopulations of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The findings, from eight abstracts presented this week at the ESC Congress 2013, collectively show that anticoagulant therapy - which is known to significantly lower stroke risk in AF patients - is consistently under-utilised among those at-risk AF patients...

Early Loss of Immediate Reperfusion While Stent Retriever in Place Predicts Successful Final Reperfusion in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Brief Reports
Conclusions— ELOIR during the embedding period after deployment of stent retrievers is associated with successful final reperfusion, likely because of greater thrombus engagement with the stent retriever. ELOIR may be a useful finding to guide duration of embedding time in clinical practice and design of novel stent retrievers.

Smoking Paradox in Patients Hospitalized With Coronary Artery Disease or Acute Ischemic Stroke: Findings From Get With The Guidelines Original Articles
Conclusions— Among patients hospitalized with CAD and AIS, smoking is a risk factor for early age of onset, even among those with few vascular risk factors. The persistent association with lower in-hospital mortality after adjusted and stratified analyses probably represents residual unmeasured confounding, although a biological effect of smoking cannot be excluded. Further clinical and prospective population-based studies are needed to explore variables that contribute to outcomes in these patients.

Academic-Community Hospital Comparison of Vulnerabilities in Door-to-Needle Process for Acute Ischemic Stroke Original Articles
Conclusions— Although the identification of common critical failures suggests opportunities for a generalizable process redesign, differences in the criticality and nature of failures must be addressed at the individual hospital level, to develop robust and sustainable solutions to reduce DTN time.

Transradial access in acute ischemic stroke intervention
Conclusions Failure of TFA in the endovascular treatment of AIS is uncommon but leads to unacceptable delays in reperfusion and poor outcomes. Standardization of benchmarks for access switch could serve as a guide for neurointerventionalists. TRA is a valid approach for the endovascular treatment of AIS.

Spanish Version of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale: Awareness and Use in the United States. A Survey Study (P6.023)
Conclusion: Neurology and Emergency medicine training programs are generally not aware of the availability of the NIHSS Spanish version. There is a need to increase awareness and to promote the use of the Spanish version of the NIHSS and to address the validation of its use by interpreters given the large and expected increase in the population of Hispanics.Disclosure: Dr. Villalobos has nothing to disclose. Mechanical Thrombectomy Improves Outcome for Large Vessel Occlusion Stroke after Cardiac Surgery
Stroke is a feared complication of cardiac surgery. Modern clot-retrieval techniques provide effective treatment for large vessel occlusion (LVO) strokes. The purpose of this study was to 1) report the incidence of LVO stroke after cardiac surgery at a large academic center, and 2) describe outcomes of postoperative LVO strokes.

Imaging selection in ischemic stroke: Feasibility of automated CT‐perfusion analysis
ConclusionsAutomated CTP‐based mismatch selection is rapid, robust in clinical practice, and associated with faster treatment decisions than MRI. This technological advance has the potential to improve the standardization and reproducibility of interpretation of advanced imaging and extend use to practice settings beyond highly specialized academic centers.
