Hibernating ground squirrels provide clues to new stroke treatments
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) In the fight against brain damage caused by stroke, researchers have turned to an unlikely source of inspiration: hibernating ground squirrels. While the animals' brains experience dramatically reduced blood flow during hibernation, just like human patients after a certain type of stroke, the squirrels emerge from their extended naps suffering no ill effects. Now, a team of NIH-funded scientists has identified a potential drug that could grant the same resilience to stroke patients.

UK HealthCare, partners receive prestigious CDC grant to improve stroke care in Kentucky
(University of Kentucky) UK HealthCare, UofL Health, the Kentucky Department for Public Health's Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program (KHDSP), and other state partners have been awarded the prestigious Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program Grant by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This $1.8 million grant aims to optimize both stroke prevention among those at high risk as well as improve the care and outcomes for stroke patients throughout Kentucky.

NIH awards $40 million in grants to reduce stroke disparities in the US
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Four research centers will develop high-impact culturally tailored interventions aimed at lowering stroke risk among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. Together the centers are expected to receive $40 million in funding over five years, contingent on the availability of funds from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health.

CONCLUSIONS:Study of 2 age-matched groups with mild and severe weakness demonstrated different effect of BoNT-lowered spasticity on motor system engagement. Conclusions: Among neurologists in training (residents and stroke fellows) mobile devices had good to excellent sensitivity for identification of AIS. Mobile devices also has good to excellent specificity for the identification of the HMCA.
