Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma in an Adult Patient with Complex Congenital Heart Disease
We report the case of a 27-year-old man who developed sudden upper back pain with no specific precipitant. Five days later, he visited our emergency department complaining of weakness in both lower limbs and dysuria. He had a history of intracardiac repair and a Blalock-Park procedure for an interrupted aortic arch and ventricular septal defect in infancy. Additionally, he had undergone an aortic root dilatation and aortic valve replacement at the age of 10 because of progression of aortic and supra-aortic stenosis and had received chronic anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy with warfarin and aspirin, respectively. An...

Pre-infarction angina is associated with improved prognosis in diabetic patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction – data from a contemporary cohort
Background Pre-infarction angina (PIA) is associated with improved prognosis in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Some studies suggest that diabetes may blunt the effect of ischaemic preconditioning. We sought to study the impact of PIA in diabetic patients with STEMI. Methods Consecutive patients with STEMI who underwent primary angioplasty were included. PIA was defined as ≥1 episode of chest pain during the week preceding STEMI diagnosis. Incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were defined as the first occurrence of all-cause death, stroke or acute myocardial infarction....

Lipoprotein(a) apheresis in patients with peripheral arterial disease: rationale and clinical results
AbstractPatients with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are at a  very high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Elevated lipoprotein(a) levels have been shown to be a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke. More recently elevated lipoprotein(a) levels have also been demonstrated to be associated with prevalent and incident PAD, and even may be a stronger risk factor for PAD compared with CAD. Lipoprotein apheresis is currently the only efficient way to lower lipoprotein(a) levels. Lipoprotein(a) apheresis has been shown to reduce major coronary events in patients with CAD. There...

Utility of S100A12 as an Early Biomarker in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction
Conclusions and Relevance: S100A12 rapidly identified patients with STEMI, more accurately than other cardiac biomarkers, especially within the first 2 h after symptom onset. The peak plasma S100A12 level was a strong predictor of 1-year prognosis after STEMI.PMID:34977174 | PMC:PMC8718434 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2021.747511

Classical prescription Dachuanxiong Formula delays nitroglycerin-induced pain response in migraine mice through reducing endothelin-1 level and regulating fatty acid biosynthesis
CONCLUSIONS: The present study revealed the anti-migraine effect of DCXF in migraine mice and provided insights into the mechanisms of DCXF-mediating anti-migraine treatment.PMID:35032586 | DOI:10.1016/j.jep.2022.114992

Mental Stress and Cardiovascular Health-Part I
J Clin Med. 2022 Jun 10;11(12):3353. doi: 10.3390/jcm11123353.ABSTRACTEpidemiological studies have shown that a substantial proportion of acute coronary events occur in individuals who lack the traditional high-risk cardiovascular (CV) profile. Mental stress is an emerging risk and prognostic factor for coronary artery disease and stroke, independently of conventional risk factors. It is associated with an increased rate of CV events. Acute mental stress may develop as a result of anger, fear, or job strain, as well as consequence of earthquakes or hurricanes. Chronic stress may develop as a result of long-term or repetiti...

Young mother with lupus and life-altering cardiocerebrovascular nightmare: a case report
CONCLUSION: Recognizing and anticipating gender-specific issues in managing patients with SLE are keys to preventing catastrophic complications. Multi-disciplinary team involvement is critical in dealing with complex cases.PMID:35898406 | PMC:PMC9311826 | DOI:10.1093/ehjcr/ytac293
