Investigating the prevalence of and predictive and risk factors for pulmonary embolism in patients with COVID-19 in Nemazee Teaching Hospital
CONCLUSION: Regression analysis revealed that age, blood pressure, heart attack, and albumin levels were independent predictors of PTE.PMID:37431097 | DOI:10.5045/br.2023.2023076

Cerebral infarction and in-hospital mortality for patients admitted to hospital with intracardiac thrombus: insights from the National Inpatient Sample
Abstract The factors associated with cerebral infarction and mortality in patients hospitalized with intracardiac thrombus are unknown. A retrospective cohort study was undertaken of nationally representative hospital admissions in the National Inpatient Sample with a diagnosis of intracardiac thrombus between 2016 to 2019. Multiple logistic regressions were used to define factors associated with cerebral infarction and in-hospital mortality. There were a total of 175,370 admissions for patients with intracardiac thrombus and 10.1% patients had cerebral infarction (n  = 17,675). Intracardiac thrombus represented 4.4%...

D-dimer and the risk of hypertension: The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: D-dimer concentration reflects pathophysiology related to the development of hypertension. Specific mechanisms require further study and may involve adiposity.PMID:36760775 | PMC:PMC9903654 | DOI:10.1016/j.rpth.2022.100016

Sleep disordered breathing and its relation to stroke and pulmonary hypertension in children with sickle cell disease: a single-center cross-sectional study
AbstractSleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a common underdiagnosed sequela of sickle cell disease (SCD) that has been linked to the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises. To determine the frequency of SDB in children with SCD and its association to SCD-related complications, thirty children and adolescents with SCD at their steady state underwent clinical, laboratory, and radiological assessment using transcranial duplex (TCD) and echo assessment of tricuspid regurge velocity (TRV). All participants had an overnight polysomnography after completing the modified STOP-Bang questionnaire. The mean age of the studied cohort was ...

Independent risk factors for an increased incidence of thromboembolism after lung transplantation
ConclusionsThe incidence of TE after LTX is high, especially in lung transplant recipients with a BMI  >  25 and an age >  55 years as well as cardiovascular risk factors closely associated with the metabolic syndrome. As these patients comprise a growing recipient fraction, intensified research should focus on the risks and benefits of regular screening or a prolonged TE prophylaxis in these patients.Trial registration number DKRS: 00021501.
