A single session of moderate intensity walking increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the chronic post-stroke patients.
Conclusions This study suggests a potential mechanism for the beneficial effects of exercise as a component of recovery from stroke, and provides the basis for future studies that will elucidate the specific parameters for clinical applications. PMID: 29078742 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Reliability and validity of a Chinese version of the Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness (SSCI) in patients with stroke.
Discussion The results provide initial evidence that the SSCI is a reliable and validated measure for evaluating stigma in stroke patients in China. PMID: 30900522 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Feasibility of integrative games and novel therapeutic game controller for telerehabilitation of individuals chronic post-stroke living in the community.
Conclusions: These findings indicate the feasibility and efficacy of the system in providing home-based telerehabilitation. The BrightBrainer system needs to be further evaluated in randomized control trials and with individuals early post-stroke. PMID: 31875775 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Altered taste and stroke: a case report and literature review.
Abstract Patients with altered taste perception following stroke are at risk for malnutrition and associated complications that may impede recovery and adversely affect quality of life. Such deficits often induce and exacerbate depressive symptomatology, which can further hamper recovery. It is important for clinicians and rehabilitation specialists to monitor stroke patients for altered taste perception so that this issue can be addressed. The authors present the case of a patient who experienced an isolated ischemic infarct affecting a primary cortical taste area. This case is unusual in that the isolated injury...

Bone Marrow Cell Transplantation Time-Dependently Abolishes Efficacy of Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor After Stroke in Hypertensive Rats Basic Sciences
Conclusions— G-CSF improved functional recovery in spontaneously hypertensive rats, but this effect was abolished by cotransplantation of BM MNC after 48 hours. In the spleen, transplanted cells may hinder the clearance of granulocytes that were massively increased by G-CSF. Increased circulation and infiltration of granulocytes into the ischemic brain may be detrimental for stroke outcome.

Stress and depression scales in aphasia: relation between the aphasia depression rating scale, stroke aphasia depression questionnaire-10, and the perceived stress scale.
CONCLUSIONS: The SADQ-10 and ADRS appear to be acceptable measures of depressive symptoms in aphasia patients. Measurements of perceived stress may also be an important factor in assessment of depressive symptoms. PMID: 27348232 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Affective Prosody and Depression After Stroke: A Pilot Study Brief Reports
Conclusions— Early alterations of affective prosody are associated with a higher risk of PSD 3 months after a stroke. This new physiological approach overcomes traditional barriers associated with clinical instruments and contributes to the prediction of this disorder.

Comorbid Psychiatric Disease Is Associated With Lower Rates of Thrombolysis in Ischemic Stroke Brief Report
Background and Purpose—Intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) improves outcomes after acute ischemic stroke but is underused in certain patient populations. Mental illness is pervasive in the United States, and patients with comorbid psychiatric disease experience inequities in treatment for a range of conditions. We aimed to determine whether comorbid psychiatric disease is associated with differences in IVT use in acute ischemic stroke. Methods—Acute ischemic stroke admissions between 2007 and 2011 were identified in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. Psychiatric disease was defined by International Classification of Diseases, ...

Association between incongruence about survivor function and outcomes among stroke survivors and family caregivers.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this study suggest that survivors and caregivers often have incongruent appraisals of survivor function, that incongruence does not improve naturally over time, and that incongruence may be detrimental for survivor and caregiver outcomes. Further research should be directed at the mitigation of incongruence and strategies to improve outcomes for both survivors and family caregivers. PMID: 30207873 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cognitive training in an everyday-like virtual reality enhances visual-spatial memory capacities in stroke survivors with visual field defects.
Conclusions: The results of the current study suggest that VR training can improve particularly visual-spatial skills in patients with hemianopia or quadrantanopia. Our study thus introduces an interesting novel treatment approach to improve cognitive functions relevant to daily life in stroke patients with visual field defects. Factors associated with depressive symptoms of carepartners of stroke survivors after discharge from rehabilitation therapy.
Conclusions: Negative impacts of caregiving were found in this group of relatively high physically functioning SS which may hinder CP from providing optimal support for SS. Addressing CP needs including education regarding depression, fatigue, SS memory, and behavior problems, and family functioning while SS is receiving rehabilitation therapy may be important considerations to help facilitate the CP to support the SS in carrying over therapeutic activities in the home environment. Sedentary time and activity behaviors after stroke rehabilitation: Changes in the first 3 months home.
CONCLUSIONS: Sedentary time reduced and walking activity increased between discharge home and 3 months later. Interventions targeting mood and physical function may warrant testing to reduce sedentary behavior 3 months following discharge. PMID: 32578523 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anxiety After Stroke Clinical Sciences
Background and Purpose—Anxiety after stroke is common and disabling. Stroke trialists have treated anxiety as a homogenous condition, and intervention studies have followed suit, neglecting the different treatment approaches for phobic and generalized anxiety. Using diagnostic psychiatric interviews, we aimed to report the frequency of phobic and generalized anxiety, phobic avoidance, predictors of anxiety, and patient outcomes at 3 months poststroke/transient ischemic attack. Methods—We followed prospectively a cohort of new diagnosis of stroke/transient ischemic attack at 3 months with a telephone semistructured psych...

Telephone Assessment and Skill-Building Kit for Stroke Caregivers: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The TASK II intervention reduced depressive symptoms and improved life changes for caregivers with mild to severe depressive symptoms. The TASK II intervention reduced unhealthy days for the total sample, although not sustained over the long term. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov.
