Background: Stroke accounts for approximately as 5.0% of disability-adjusted years of life and 10.0% of all deaths worldwide. Secondary stroke prevention in surviving individuals, which includes the use of statins, reduces atherothrombotic stroke recurrence, complications and mortality. The present study aimed to characterize the Brazilian population with stroke history and estimate the prevalence of statin use as secondary prevention.Methods: This is a population-based cross-sectional study conducted in Brazilian urban areas.

Treatment with Atorvastatin During Vascular Remodeling Promotes Pericyte-Mediated Blood-Brain Barrier Maturation Following Ischemic Stroke
This study examined our hypothesis that, during vascular remodeling after stroke, treatment with atorvastatin could facilitate BBB maturation in remodeling vasculature in ischemic brain. Adult spontaneously hypertensive rats underwent middle cerebral artery occlusion with reperfusion (MCAO/RP). Atorvastatin, at dose of 3  mg/kg, was delivered daily starting at 14 days after MCAO/RP onset for 7 days. Shingles rash linked to higher risk of stroke
Shingles, the nerve rash in adulthood caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, is an independent risk factor for stroke and other blood clot events, the largest study to confirm the association has found.Publishing their findings in Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, the researchers found that shingles was a risk factor for stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA, a mini-stroke).The increased risk was independent of other factors known to raise the chances of vascular events, including obesity, smoking and high cholesterol.

Predictors of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome in Ischemic Stroke Undergoing Systemic Thrombolysis with Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator
Conclusions: In our sample of IV tPA-treated AIS patients, clinical and laboratory characteristics available on presentation were able to identify patients likely to develop SIRS during their acute hospitalization. Validation is required in other populations. If validated, this score could assist providers in predicting who will develop SIRS after treatment with IV tPA.

Conclusions: We developed and cross-validated cumulative incidence functions for separate prediction of 10-year ICH and IS risk. These functions can be useful to further specify an individual's stroke risk.

Circulating Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Genetic Association Study Identifies a Novel Gene Cluster Associated With Stroke in Whites Original Articles
Conclusions— This is the first large-scale genetic association study of circulating NT-proANP levels performed with replication and functional assessment that identified genetic variants in the MTHFR-CLCN6-NPPA-NPPB cluster to be significantly associated with NT-proANP levels. The clinical significance of this variation is related to lower NT-proANP levels, higher blood pressures, and an increased risk of stroke in the general community.
