The first prognostic model for stroke and death in patients with systolic heart failure.
CONCLUSIONS: This novel prognostic model predicts the overall risk of ischemic stroke or death for HF patients. This model compares favorably for death with the Seattle model and has the added utility of including stroke as an endpoint. Use of this model will help identify those patients in need of more intensive monitoring and therapy and may help identify appropriate populations for trials of new therapies. Design and rationale of the STroke secondary prevention with catheter ABLation and EDoxaban clinical trial in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: The STABLED study.
CONCLUSION: This study will investigate the effectiveness and safety of CA and basic anticoagulation treatment with edoxaban for patients with NVAF who have suffered a recent ischemic stroke. The aim is to determine the best evidence for an optimal treatment strategy for patients with NVAF and recent stroke. TRIAL REGISTRATION: UMIN000031424/NCT03777631. Underutilization of warfarin for stroke prophylaxis in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: A high portion of AF/AFL patients with CHADS2 score ≥2 were undertreated with warfarin. As ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death in Korea, a more aggressive approach to prevent stroke in patients with AF/AFL is required. PMID: 26242197 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prescription status of oral anticoagulants in patients with acute cerebral infarction with non-valvular atrial fibrillation at the time of stroke onset.
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that OAC prescription is affected by a previous history of cerebral infarction, a history of dementia, concurrent use of antiplatelet drugs, and whether the patient visits a specialist. PMID: 31843290 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Slope in preload recruitable stroke work relationship predicts survival after left ventriculoplasty and mitral repair in patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: Mw, the slope in the PRSW relationship, may predict survival after LVP and MVP in patients with idiopathic DCM. PMID: 24954287 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left atrial appendage closure for stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: A current overview
J Cardiol. 2022 Nov 15:S0914-5087(22)00277-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.11.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia encountered in clinical practice and its prevalence increases with age. AF causes palpitations, heart failure, and cardiogenic embolism. Of them, the most critical and fatal complication is a cardio-embolic event. Oral anticoagulation plays a central role in reducing stroke risk in AF patients. Recently, when oral anticoagulation is considered in patients with non-valvular AF who are eligible for direct oral coagulations, they are preferred to vitamin K antagoni...

Long-term PT-INR levels and the clinical events in the patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: A special reference to low-intensity warfarin therapy.
CONCLUSIONS: The event rates were similar between the low- (1.6-1.99) and high- (2.0-2.59) intensity warfarin therapy groups in aged patients: <70 years and ≥70 years. Time in therapeutic range and a transient fall or rise in PT-INR were risks for clinical events. Blunt head trauma and concomitant use of antiplatelets were risks for intracranial hemorrhage. Epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in Japan: An overview study
J Cardiol. 2023 Aug 15:S0914-5087(23)00200-9. doi: 10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.08.006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as heart disease and stroke, have a significant impact on life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, and medical costs in Japan. Each prefecture is currently promoting measures in accordance with the Japanese National Plan for Promotion of Measures Against Cerebrovascular and Cardiovascular Disease, which was established by the government. In recent years, the crude mortality rate of heart disease in Japan has been increasing year by year with the aging population. Meanwhile, the ...

Low-dose dobutamine induces left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and a narrow QRS: a study using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography.
CONCLUSIONS: Dobutamine may induce LV mechanical dyssynchrony in a substantial proportion of patients with DCM and a narrow QRS. In such cases, regional LV contractile reserve does not fully contribute to an increase in global LVSV. PMID: 23473770 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of persistent smoking on long-term outcomes in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Smoking status, independent of age, antithrombotic treatment, and clinical risk factors, predicted long-term adverse outcomes including bleeding events in patients with nonvalvular AF. There might be an obvious impact of persistent smoking on intracranial bleeding. PMID: 25129639 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
