Prevalence of subclinical coronary artery disease in ischemic stroke patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that the prevalence of subclinical CAD in ischemic stroke patients was high, and that a quarter of them had high-risk CAD. Age, diabetes, stroke, and male sex were independent predictors of high-risk CAD. PMID: 24861913 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of atrial high-rate episodes on the risk of future stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Embolic stroke events are common in Japanese patients with CIEDs. AF events lasting ≥30s and an enlarged left atrium are the risk factors of embolic stroke in this population. PMID: 30728105 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The first prognostic model for stroke and death in patients with systolic heart failure.
CONCLUSIONS: This novel prognostic model predicts the overall risk of ischemic stroke or death for HF patients. This model compares favorably for death with the Seattle model and has the added utility of including stroke as an endpoint. Use of this model will help identify those patients in need of more intensive monitoring and therapy and may help identify appropriate populations for trials of new therapies. Design and rationale of the STroke secondary prevention with catheter ABLation and EDoxaban clinical trial in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation: The STABLED study.
CONCLUSION: This study will investigate the effectiveness and safety of CA and basic anticoagulation treatment with edoxaban for patients with NVAF who have suffered a recent ischemic stroke. The aim is to determine the best evidence for an optimal treatment strategy for patients with NVAF and recent stroke. TRIAL REGISTRATION: UMIN000031424/NCT03777631. Underutilization of warfarin for stroke prophylaxis in patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: A high portion of AF/AFL patients with CHADS2 score ≥2 were undertreated with warfarin. As ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of death in Korea, a more aggressive approach to prevent stroke in patients with AF/AFL is required. PMID: 26242197 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Structural heart intervention for prevention of embolic and hemorrhagic stroke: The new field of neurocardiology.
Abstract Cardiogenic stroke (CS), characteristic causes of which include atrial fibrillation (AF) and right-to-left shunting due to a patent foramen ovale (PFO), has a well-known tendency to be associated with a more extensive ischemic area. This may result in severe neurological damage, and require strict life-long antithrombotic therapy. However, the fact that some patients have problems complying with the requirement for extended oral antithrombotic treatment has motivated the development of alternative approaches for stroke prevention. Heart structures such as the left atrial appendage (LAA) and PFO are potent...

Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction is associated with atrial remodeling and risk or presence of stroke in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with paroxysmal AF, the elevated LV filling pressure estimated by E/Em is independently associated with the presence of stroke or TIA. PMID: 26603328 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Relationships between the QTc interval and cardiovascular, stroke, or sudden cardiac mortality in the general Japanese population.
CONCLUSION: In the general Japanese population, cardiovascular and stroke mortality increase progressively with the Bazett QTc interval quartile, while the risk of sudden cardiac death exhibits a J-shaped relationship with the latter variable. PMID: 25066337 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictive value of left atrial function for latent paroxysmal atrial fibrillation as the cause of embolic stroke of undetermined source
CONCLUSIONS: LA strain was significantly associated with new development of AF. Patients with impaired LA function at admission should be carefully monitored to find AF.PMID:34119401 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2021.05.005

Prescription status of oral anticoagulants in patients with acute cerebral infarction with non-valvular atrial fibrillation at the time of stroke onset.
CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that OAC prescription is affected by a previous history of cerebral infarction, a history of dementia, concurrent use of antiplatelet drugs, and whether the patient visits a specialist. PMID: 31843290 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cost-effectiveness analysis of patent foramen ovale closure with Amplatzer plus medical therapy compared to medical therapy in patients with a history of stroke in France
CONCLUSION: Amplatzer plus MT represents a cost-effective treatment option and is associated with lower stroke recurrence compared to MT alone for PFO patients with a prior history of stroke.PMID:34772575 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2021.10.009

5-year Stroke Rates in Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation after Watchman compared to Direct Oral Anticoagulants
CONCLUSION: Even in a high-risk population, the WATCHMAN is comparable to DOAC therapy in the primary prevention of hemorrhagic strokes and may provide benefit in the rates of bleeding events, TIAs, and ischemic strokes.PMID:37541428 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2023.07.015
