Patient suitability for free water protocols in acute stroke and general medicine: a qualitative study of clinician perceptions
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Despite the benefits of FWPs in other settings, in acute stroke and general medicine, clinicians erred on the side of safety and, in most cases, would not implement an FWP. Future clinical research is needed to systematically design high-quality and feasible clinical trials to determine the benefits and safety of FWPs for patients with dysphagia in these settings. Neurologic manifestations of geriatric patients with cancer (P6.188)
Conclusions:Neurologic manifestations are reported in about 40% of patients with cancer, approximately half of living patients with cancer are over 65 years of age, this increase merits the medical and related personnel to be prepared and recognize, diagnose and treat this highly morbid conditions. Gastrostomy is a commonly performed procedure for enteral feeding in patients with diverse conditions such as malnutrition, stroke, dementia, Parkinsonism and other neurodegenerative diseases as well as head and neck and upper gastrointestinal cancers. PEG is usually preferred but IR guided and surgical gastrostomies are often performed based on patient related factors and local practice preferences. The aim of our study was to review demographic and clinical characteristics of patients undergoing gastrostomies in the inpatient setting.
