Ischemic Stroke Management: Posthospitalization and Transition of Care
Am Fam Physician. 2023 Jul;108(1):70-77.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack exist on a continuum of the same disease process. Ischemic stroke is common, and more than 85% of stroke risk is attributed to modifiable risk factors. The initial management of acute stroke is usually performed in the emergency department and hospital settings. Family physicians have a key role in follow-up, ensuring that a complete diagnostic evaluation has been performed, addressing modifiable risk factors, facilitating rehabilitation, and managing chronic s...

The effect of surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation on patients with post-stroke dysphagia.
CONCLUSIONS: Swallowing function in the patients with PSD was significantly improved using TDT combined with NMES. Stimulating electrodes placed at the suprahyoid region or on both suprahyoid and infrahyoid regions resulted in no difference of effect. However, NMES on suprahyoid region could further improve the moving distance of hyoid bone anteriorly. PMID: 29278871 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anterior and posterior diaphragm kinesio taping for intractable hiccups after ischemic stroke: A case report
Rationale: Pathophysiologic mechanisms of the central nervous system, such as stroke, can be associated with intractable hiccups. Intractable hiccups can be associated with potentially fatal consequences, thus requiring safe management in an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) setting with a multidisciplinary team approach to optimize mobility and feeding. Patient Concerns: A 49-year-old male presented to the emergency department with complaints of vomiting and dizziness. Diagnoses: Head computed tomography revealed moderate acute inferior cerebellar infarct in the territory of the posterior inferior cerebellar...

Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy: overdue to address a nutrition crisis with a transformative population approach
J Phys Ther Sci. 2023 Sep;35(9):645-658. doi: 10.1589/jpts.35.645. Epub 2023 Sep 2.ABSTRACTThis timely evidence synthesis supports the need for an Academy of Plant-based Physical Therapy. Given epidemiological and empirical evidence and the profession's values and practice scope, the time has come for a specialty of plant-based physical therapy based on population health principles. This review connects these factors. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are largely nutrition-related resulting from unnatural elements of our diet (i.e., heart disease, several cancers, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal di...
